Former NHL enforcer Donald Brashear hasn't even started his mixed martial arts career and he is already on his third opponent.
A Ringside MMA spokesperson said Monday night that Steve Begin is injured and Brashear will now face Mathieu Bergeron of Sherbrooke, Que., in Saturday's Ringside 11 card in Quebec City.
Begin (0-1) was an injury replacement for Martin Trempe (0-2), a former junior hockey enforcer who hurt his collarbone injury training.
The Brashear bout is on the undercard of a middleweight bout between former UFC fighters Patrick Cote and Todd Brown.
The 39-year-old Brashear boxed three times as an amateur, but is new to MMA. He fought 212 times in a 1,025-game NHL career from 1993 to 2010.
Brashear also picked up 85 goals and 120 assists.
Trempe spent three years in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, collecting one goal and 308 penalty minutes.
Brashear's NHL career ended with the New York Rangers in 2009-10. He spent some time this season in the Ligue Nord-Americain de Hockey, a Quebec minor-pro circuit that highlights fighting.
Brashear can take a hockey stick to the back of the head like a champ. He should do well in MMA.
