Matt Hamill wins using Gracie Jiu Jitsu!

Best thread ever IMO
Since Matt learned how to take the back with hooks in wrestling, why didn't he use it when the opportunity presented itself over and over? Could it be because he sucks at BJJ?
Yes, the lunging jab is a staple of classic GJJ training.
Too bad that an Olympic caliber wrestler shows the lack of the very BJJ technique in his debut fight that people are claiming all wrestlers have knowledge of.
Also too bad that people don't just simply RECOGNIZE (like Pat Militech, Hughes, and the rest of MFS) that wrestling PLUS bjj equals an extremely difficult combined skillset to beat without having that exact same skillset.
Adam LaClair is correct.
you are right Adam, never disagreed that crosstraining was wrong. not sure why Hammil didnt take that back, maybe he was more comfortable doing the GnP from there.
I think Matt was very nervous about being on the ground with a submission artist, which is why he asked Saul about just standing and trading with Mike rather than going to the ground.
I'm sure there are some wrestlers who do take the back on occasion, but I doubt even accomplished wrestlers take the back with the frequency that bjj guys do. I'd bet Matt also recognized this, and didn't want to even go to THAT position, figuring Mike would have some good counters that would leave Matt in a vulnerable state.
Personally, I think Matt used an excellent strategy. The maxim is to take your opponent out of his game. That means don't box a boxer, and don't grapple a grappler. Even though Matt is a fantastic wrestler, he's seen guys get submitted, and was hurt the day before his fight with an armbar from Besping. If I was Matt, I'd have gone toe to toe first to test the waters too, before I went to the ground without solid submission defenses in place, regardless of my wrestling skills. Matt played a good strategy, and got the W.
