I don't know if he should have been cut, but when you sign the contract you are saying I will be there to fight this guy at this weight. That is part of what the fighter is promising the UFC. Plenty of guys fight on short notice all the time, and they make weight. And I don't think that will change, they just know short notice fights aren't a reason to miss weight now.

I'm not shilling but if Damarques thought he couldn't make weight, they may well have got someone else who could. It's not as if the fight was 100% going to be scrapped if he hadn't agreed to it 
Johnson fights always ended in spectacular fashion, win or lose. He certainly was an entertaining guy which is why I was a bit surprised to see him cut. I wish him the best of luck in the future.

Probably because he didn't want to get fired for not taking the fight like Rich Attonito had just been. What a shitty dilemma that was for DJ. Seems kind of burdensome to put on someone who'd just fought a few weeks before.

Agreed the cut was a little harsh when Jhonson was signing up for the fight on short notice in good faith. Johnson should have been more realistic on his weight cut but the guy was just trying to cut weight on short notice and was doing It to step up for the UFC.

No he wasn't fighting a middle weight, jesus people on here will say any thing.
Heads up, Johnson didn't put on 20 pounds of muscle in the two months in between the Swick and Nelson fight. He had accumulated fat and water weight. His strength, which is the reason they have weight classes, stayed the same.
Plus Nelson had the advantage of a full training camp while Johnson was on a no contact suspension.

Joe Silva comes back and says, we'll offer DJ a catch weight of 175.
If Demarques Johnson didn't think he could make 175, it's reasonable to assume that DJ thought that if he turned down a catch weight, that he'd be fired(based on Joe Silva wanting DJ's camp to know that Attonito turned down the same fight and was cut).
If it was up to me, if I felt if I said no and I'd be fired, I'd try to take the fight, and hope that I win.
Also, Thiago Alves beat Matt Hughes when Thiago Alves came in over the weight limit. UFC *rewarded Alves by giving him a #1 contender fight his very next fight.

That's complete bullshit. Cutting weight is extremely difficult and it's really not this earth shattering issue the way Zuffa makes it out. The fight happened and Gunnar won and got extra money from DJ and he fought a dehydrated, stressed out guy who happened to be heavier than him a little bit. It's not like DJ was training hard to be so much bigger and then didn't cut. So let's get real please.
This is nothing but the ingratitude of Lorenzo and Dana on full display and the APOLOGISTS are so laughable. If Zuffa wants people fighting teammates and fighting on short notice then they can't turn around and treat people like dogshit.
This is why 151 got canceled. This is why guys are not fighting when hurt.
