The striking surface is similar in terms of padding, honestly. The big difference is that the boxing glove (depending on the brand) distributes that 8 or 10 ounces across the entire hand, up past the wrist. So, defense is completely different between the two glove types.

The way boxers learn to hold their hands simply doesn't work with little gloves. You can get away with so much more defensively with boxing gloves on; Philly shell isn't anywhere near as effective.

Humphrey -do people forget? they're nearly identical in impact.. i thought this silly myth was put to bed years ago. the only difference is a lot more with NO gloves, but boxing/mma gloves hit the same.
not to mention people seem to forget the gloves don't protect the guy getting hit nearly as much as the guy's hand that's doing the hitting

He's right and he's wrong. He's 100% right about power as you noted, but that's not why people are laughing.
The part he's not mentioning is that his style is entirely dependent on the defensive blocking boxing gloves can allow. The actual oz difference is mild and the difference in concussive force is even more mild, but the bulkiness of boxing gloves can create a huge difference in blocking.
His entire style, the shoulder roll and the way he deflects shots, would fail terribly with MMA gloves. You see kickboxers that transitioned into MMA suffer all the time because of the difference in glove size -- most common mistake being when a former kickboxer performs a basic lead-hook block by raising his rear hand to his cheek, only to have the hook slip right over the glove and KO him.
Mayweather would definitely destroy McGreggor in a boxing match, even with MMA gloves, but the point is McGreggor's ability to land shots will differ dramatically now that he's fighting in boxing gloves, particularly against a fighter like Floyd. A fighter that uses a specfic counter style that not only exploits this difference in glove size, but is, as a result, entirely unique to boxing and unseen in McGreggor's profession.

This is also why the best boxer / kickboxer crossovers into MMA had very explosive and offensive styles. The offense translates beautifully with some minor adjustments, the defense not so well. Particularly blocking and parrying.
It's a huge difference when you try to parry a small glove vs a huge boxing glove
4oz gloves are at the very least inconsistent. to think that a HW 4oz glove is padded nearly the same as a flyweights is crazy. so yeah at lighter weights they definitely are padded up more than shane carwins meat hammer mitts.
