That could've happened to boxing
Boxing has pretty much been dead (at least in the US) since the 90s. Mayweather and Pacquiao are the last big names and their careers are basically over.
Mayweather becoming the face of boxing was probably the worst thing that could have happened. His skills at gaming the system and avoiding the fight while still winning are 2nd to none. And this exactly why he was the worst thing for boxing.
Boxing is supposed to be a fight simulation. Obviously mma is closer to an actual fight but boxing is combat none the less. Floyd became the master at effectively avoiding the fight. People do not tune in to watch that (with the exception of a few boxing elitists). They tune in to watch fights. This is how the ppvs are billed anyways. They are promoted as fights.
Floyd "beat" all the decent fighters left for the time being, by effectively avoiding the fight, he has effectively sucked the remaining life out of boxing, in regard to mainstream media attention.
IMO boxing will become even more niche than MMA in the next few years. My only hope is that MMA does not go down the same path. Unfortunately it seems that MMA is
Relax.
Canelo is only 24 and gave us a spectacular ko last night.
GGG next weekend.
Boxing is fine.
It will always be that way in every fight sport.
Mayweather is an amazingly skilled boxer. Like GSP was an amazingly skilled MMA fighter. There's comes a point when there's just too much money on the line and when you are good enough to avoid a scrap while easily winning, you will do that.
Klitschko is the same as well.
Lennox became known for resting on his jab.
It's life brother. Not fan friendly at all, but not much you can do to prevent it.
TFK Cletus Redpecker III - Relax. Can't wait for GGG!

People are fuckin dumb. I guarantee the Canelo fight did very good ratings and everyone who watched saw a spectacular KO of the year. Not to mention sports center also showing it. Trust me, boxing is just fine
If Mayweather fought like a Gatti or a Chavez he wouldn't still be around. The guy has maximized his career and earnings, I can't blame him.
I just have to say this. Comparing GSP to Floyd is idiotic. One does all he can to avoid engaging landing an occasional counter. The other would spend the entire fight totally controlling his opponents. Just because he did it with wrestling doesn't mean he wasn't fighting.

Controls everything including athletic commission, venue, and judges.
LMAO at Floyd not completely controlling his opponents. Yes, it is similar to GSP's game - I am a fan of both and was going for Manny all the way but this post fight saltiness needs to stop.
Mayweather is not the first competitor in sports nor combat sports nor boxing to win via strategy and technique and game plan.
And yeah, 24 year old Kanelo got the potential KTFO of the year a week after the May Pac so calm down with this boxing is dead shit. It must have more than 9 lives because hasnt it been dying for decades?
To a certain degree boring fights are part of the evolution of any combat sport. A combination of fighters being extremely well prepared, less specialised and close matched reduces the opportunities to capitalise on a catastrophic failure

Boring sportings contests are the part of every sport.
Avoiding the "fight" to win the competition is an option. Guys are in it to win point blank but there are plenty others who are crowd pleasers so I say it's safe to say both sports will be safe.
Canelo is very compelling I will say that. But what brings things to another level are rivalries
Ie.
The era of Ali, Fraiser, Norton, Foreman
The era of Sugar Ray Leonard, Duran, Haggler, Hearns
The era of chavez, camacho, de la hoya etc
To a much lesser degree the Era of Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis
Múltiple rivalries within a division is dead in Boxing. This coupled with all of the fighters being guys that came to fight is what made boxing transcend other sports.
I don't think boxing will ever come back to that
Your all right and wrong..... There are bright spots (canelo, ggg) but to say boxing isn't "hurting" is just dumb, but it's not dead and will never die. Floyd is great at what he does and I enjoy him in the ring, but he is sort of bad for boxing in some ways, but it's also not his fault nobody can beat him. The fact we're still arguing shows we care and it's not dead. An exciting heavyweight would bring a lot of excitement back IMO...... I'm an idiot so maybe I'm totally wrong lol
Wasa-B - LMAO at Floyd not completely controlling his opponents. Looked like he had fun doing it too. Gotta appreciate the talent, op sounds salty

Mayweather is a smart fighter. He's showing what boxing really is supposed to be. Boxing should be a game of skill, not of who can take the most shots.
Mayweather's boxing style is brilliant and is more appreciated by people with a brain in their head. People without that want slugfests non-stop.

The forums are all Canelo after last night but Mayweather, who's easy to hate because of his persona, gets almost no respect.
If Mayweather was as nice as Manny I'm convinced his style would be praised more than it's disparaged. Either way, he's an amazing boxer, plain and simple. Very likely the best anyone under 40 has seen in their lifetime and that's from a guy who roots against him every time out.
Andre Ward is more comparable to GSP imo.
mahavishnunj - its amazing to me that someone has made millions as a 'fighter' without actually ever fighting. that is kinda badass i suppose. You saying Floyd can't fight?
Wow!
