Former MMA referee and current Bellator commentator “Big” John McCarthy recently spent some time reminiscing with Josh Thomson about how scary Frank Mir was during his heyday in the UFC.

This weekend boasts a number of high-quality MMA events, but most of the attention will be focused on the UFC card headlined by Tom Aspinall and Marcin Tybura. The bout will mark Aspinall’s first fight in a year after he injured his knee against Curtis Blaydes, and plenty of fans are looking forward to seeing if the 30-year-old can resume his climb up the heavyweight rankings.
McCarthy and Thomson discussed Aspinall’s return on a recent episode of their podcast Weighing In, and McCarthy indicated that the Englishman brings back memories of one of the UFC’s former heavyweight champions.

“[Aspinall’s] got some great skills," McCarthy said. “He very much reminds me – he looks in a certain way and reminds me of Frank Mir. It’s just that I think he’s even better on the feet than Frank Mir…You talk about people that hurt people on the ground, Frank Mir was definitely one of them.”

John McCarthy Details Frank Mir’s Merciless Approach To Fighting

The mention of Mir prompted Thomson to remark that the former UFC heavyweight champion “almost got pleasure” out of hurting his opponents, and McCarthy followed up by mentioning Mir’s nasty submission skills.

“Frank’s a very intellectual guy, I love Frank and I’ve spent a lot of time with him in a lot of different places. He is absolutely that guy that – it’s almost that whole ‘proof’ thing…I think Frank Mir was that guy that was in the cage, he was very similar in that ‘Here, I’m gonna put you in this. Tap. Oh, you don’t wanna tap?’ And he would just tear it off.”

Heavyweights are typically known for their devastating knockout power, but Mir was one of the first fighters to achieve significant success in the weight class by mainly relying on his ground game. The Las Vegas-native famously claimed the heavyweight title at UFC 48 when he snapped Tim Sylvia’s arm in under a minute, and he also holds submission victories over major names such as Brock Lesnar and Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira.
Mir’s lengthy UFC career ended after he was knocked out by Mark Hunt in the main event of a UFC Fight Night card, but the 44-year-old went on to fight several times for Bellator and last competed at Triad Combat’s inaugural event in 2021.

Freeman kicked Mir in the face to get out of that leglock attempt. I mentioned that on here at the time and i think Freeman himself responded and called me a dumbass and said he kicked him in the chest lol.

He just physically looks like Frank, he doesn’t really fight like him.

I took a piss next to Kris Kristofferson at the Mohawk Racetrack outside of Toronto during the Donald Curry vs Lloyd Honeyghan fight on ppv in 1986 when I was 16. I think I splashed on his cowboy boots.
