Edgar has excellent wrestling (slammed BJ and Maynard), better standup, doesn't hit as hard, excellent sub defense, good ground game, CRAZY chin and even better recovery time.
Just to be fair, it wouldn't be easy, but I'd pick Frankie in that fight.

Whoever holds the UFC strap is number 1 in the world at their weight. If he thinks he can hold the top spot, he needs to talk to Dana about getting the chance to prove it. Until that happens, he is not number 1.

I have Melendez at number 2 in my LW rankings, and that's not half bad.
And for the record, if he ever did fight Edgar, I think Melendez takes that fight.

Melendez beat a shit load of top 10 fighters not to mention his killer game and well rounded skills..he will smoke Edgar in a unification fight
The only thing Melendez has on Edgar is more punching power. Edgar seems to have better standup overall, better wrestling, more speed, comparable chin, at least equivalent if not superior cardio, possibly more strength.
I am a big Frankie Edgar fan. I love the boxing skills displayed by MMA fighters and Frankie's are pretty solid. But I would pick Gil in that matchup, I think the pressure Gil would put on him from beginning to end would be the difference.
The best lightweights are 1 Edgar 2 Alvarez 3 miller 4 Melendez. This is not rankings, just my opinion based on skillset
