UFC featherweight Chad Mendes recently took part in a media conference call ahead of his Interim title fight vs. Conor McGregor at UFC 189 on July 11. It all began of course when division champion Jose Aldo broke a rib, throwing into question his ability to defend the title.

“Within 24 hours of the news breaking I was in Vegas talking to Dana,” said Mendes as transcribed by Mike Sloan for Sherdog. “Right away I knew it was me and Frankie right there at the top, and I knew there was a possibility of this fight happening, but this shot is mine. I talked to Dana, and we made it happen. I told him to give me that contract, let’s sign this baby right now, and we did.

“Frankie is a tough guy and has beaten some great, tough guys in his last few fights and he’s right there in the mix. But I just knocked out a guy in the first round who took Aldo five rounds. I had the fight of the year with [Aldo] last year and I feel like I deserve it. If that fight was in the States, I possibly win that fight.”

“I live a healthy lifestyle. I stay in great shape year-round. I never let my weight get too far out of control and for me to take something on three weeks’ is perfect for me. Fighting a guy like Conor, he’s a guy I know I can beat, and I’m going to get in there and do that.”

“I’ve been preparing for Conor McGregor ever since the first time I’ve seen this dude fight in the UFC. I knew he was going to talk his way to the top. He’s beaten everybody they’ve put in front of him and it’s time to do what I’ve trained for my entire life, and that’s to become a champion.”

McGregor is notorious for trash talking opponents into making the fight personal. For Mendes is not when the Irishman called him short. It was the teabagging.

“The short s---, I don’t really give a s--- about that. I’ve been short my whole life. For me, it was right before the Aldo fight, and he was talking about putting balls on my head and being very unprofessional. That was something that made it personal. For me, you don’t f---ing do that. This is the fight game and it’s something where somebody can get seriously injured, and that’s what I’m looking to do when I get in there against Conor McGregor.”

“I think a lot of the Americans and a lot of the Brazilian fans will be backing me up. I have a lot of fans, a lot of family, a lot of friends who are rooting for me. A lot of people want to see me destroy Conor McGregor.”

And after McGregor Mendes wants a trilogy fight with Aldo, but not in Brazil.

“I fought that guy twice in Brazil,” said Mendes. “If I get that belt, I’m fighting that dude in the States.”

Does this guy seriously think he beat Aldo the 2nd time? That fight was clearly 4 rounds to 1 for Aldo. Mendes was hurt numerous times and outstruck throughout the fight.

woops nvm i missread

Lol I hope this happens in the fight, I'll be a Connor fan for life ! Phone Post 3.0

Close fight idk about 4-1. But yes he was out struck but he also landed the bigger shots IMO. He PLANTED Jose early with a right Phone Post 3.0

Lol @ "in the states I win that fight"

Wtf is he on Phone Post 3.0

He gave Aldo his best shot and came up short. If he ever does beat Aldo it's because Aldo lost a step. We've seen that match up play out. It could happen on the space station and wouldn't be different. Phone Post 3.0

He also got dropped and mounted in the 1st round as well. That fight was a clear 4-1.

LOL at complaining about the fight not being in the USA. Aldo won the WEC belt in the U.S., defended it every time in the U.S., had his first UFC defense in Canada, and has defended in the U.S. including Texas and Vegas.

If you want the belt Mendes, beat him and bring it back to the U.S. He's earned the right to fight in his home country. A huge majority of his WEC and UFC fights have been out of Brazil.

These alpha male midgets are honestly most narcissistic guys ever. It's ok to talk shit about others but when someone returns the banter they get all butthurt.

Classic narcissistic behavior Phone Post 3.0

Nope, Chad's not gonna be emotional at all on 7/11.

4-1. Mendes thinks he's better than he is apparently. Not a great mindset going in to this fight. He's already angry too. I'm starting to think Conor might be right. One and done. Phone Post 3.0

I don't think you can tell the champ where he has to defend his belt. I can't imagine an American going to Brazil to defend it. Phone Post 3.0

Mendes wrestled, I guarantee he's been teabagged plenty of times.

Lots of over-exaggeration here lol he did pretty good for fighting one of the best in the world. Laughing at him for being confident? He would never be where he's at now if he had your mindsets. I understand the Connor love and fight hype makes people emotionally committed to argue like kids again but Connor is in for some shit lol he may have the answer he may secret grappling skills he may ko him but we know what Mendes has, and it's some real shit. What Connor has is what our imagination can believe would be like vs the best in the world. Phone Post 3.0

Why do they paraphrase and add in words they didn't say when they are quoting them? Phone Post 3.0

Let's just take a moment to think back to what Conor said - and examine the context? should we do that, right?

in response to someone asking if his wrestling was good or if he could handle Mendes' wrestling, it could have even been Mendes who asked - Conor rolled out a cheeky pre-prepared play on the word 'wrestling' by saying 'i'll rest my balls on your face' or something rather similar

that's just banter. cry me a river getting upset over that. Hahaha and then he demonstrates a keen sense of irony by calling Conor unprofessional, then saying he aims to seriously injure him. CLASSY.

I'm not saying he won that fight, but there is clearly Brazilian bias when you fight there. Phone Post 3.0

Haha, you ever see Phil Davis vs. Lyoto Machida?

Sounds a bit intolerant to gays to me...Dana.....???

3 minutes into round 1 Conor's gonna be like:
