UFC featherweight Chad Mendes appeared recently on the Sherdog Radio Network’s ”Beatdown” show and discussed Performance Enhancing Drugs in the UFC. Mendes said that he believes UFC Featherweight Champ Jose Aldo ‘definitely’ uses PEDs. Further, Mendes alleges that that, and not the neck injury, is why Aldo dropped of their scheduled title at UFC 176.

Aldo recently spoke with Brazil's Combate, and implied that Mendes was in PEDs.

“The first time I saw that, for me, this is huge in my mind,” said Mendes as transcribed by C.J. Tuttle for Sherdog. “He’s reaching big time. We have never seen Aldo lash out like this; we’ve never seen him lose his temper. I am in his head. I own him right now.

“This is huge for me. This is huge for me getting in there and taking that belt from him. I’ve never seen him talk like this about anybody. He’s being very disrespectful. I’ve never been caught red-handed or anything. It’s funny to me that as soon as the whole random drug testing started popping up, the next day he is injured and out of the fight. If anything, I could throw that in his face, but whatever.”

“I definitely do [think Aldo’s using PEDs]. This is something that's been ongoing, but for him to all of a sudden just drop out -- I mean he drops out of a lot of fights -- but I think it’s pretty coincidental.”

“I’d probably say at least 80 percent of fighters are probably taking something. You know, there’s guys that are coming back from injury trying to take it. Whether it’s them trying to survive, pay their mortgage, pay rent or whatever -- or guys just trying to get that full advantage to be at the top. So yeah, I think there’s a lot of people taking performance enhancing drugs.”

“I like [random drug testing]. The only thing I question about the system is what do we do about guys that are out of the country? Guys in Brazil, guys in Japan, can we trust those random drug tests? I was thinking about this the other day: If someone were to knock on Aldo’s door in Brazil and say, ‘We need to give you a random drug test,’ and he says ‘Here’s $1,000, go away,’ it’s done. I feel like something like that could happen very easily. I just want to know what the system would be -- how could we trust that it’s going to be fair everywhere?”

“So this is the thing: We’ve got all this random drug testing, all this stuff that’s going on, testing for EPO, HGH, all this stuff now -- they can get away with that stuff over in Brazil. This is why he wants me to be in Brazil and fighting in Brazil - they can do all that kind of stuff there. For me, I want this to be a fair fight. I went there first; I fought him in his backyard. I think it’s only fair he comes here and fights me in my backyard. Let’s make it one and one and see what happens. We are still working on it. I talked to [UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby] a little bit. It’s a 50/50 percent chance it could end up in Brazil. We are trying obviously to get it pushed here. We don’t know for sure.”

'I know you are but what am I?' Phone Post

Is anyone else getting sick of every fighter accusing one another or saying the % of people they think are using PED. Its obviously a big problem in the sport and we all want it fixed. But fighters should just shut up and worry about what there putting in there body! No need to blame others without any real evidence! Phone Post 3.0

Also broke something loose in Chad's head when he beat him last time.

This guy has gone full Mendes! Phone Post

Honestly I agree with Chad. Aldo always has seemed suspect to me. He's not the biggest guy for his size but something about the way he looks and how he fights, then gasses, plus the weird neck thing all the time. Just my opinion but a lot of Brazilians come off shady as hell. Phone Post

Another 'everyone else uses but meeeeeeee' :-)

They're both on some shit.

Did he just say "we are all on the horse meat"? Dana´s gonna make him retract all this.

You can get a lot more out of PED's than just excess muscle, Aldo is already a big dude before he cuts. But anyone can be on anything for cardio, strength, cutting, etc. Who's to say old banged up Aldo doesn't use it get in fighting shape?

Chad could be on something too, who knows, but there's nothing wrong with talking about these things. Making noise leads to more drug testing and if you're clean you're clean Phone Post 3.0

Mdson - Another 'everyone else uses but meeeeeeee' :-)
Added; "but 80% are on it"

Where's this 80% number come from if no one who actually talks is doing it? Phone Post 3.0

Hecklah - Oh boy.. Mendes has gone full retard. Phone Post 3.0

Welcome to the accuse your opponent era of MMA. there shuld be a moratorium on this topic in fight build up between guys who have never failed test and just fight and punish the failed tests when they happen.

This is going to get as annoying as conspiracy theories that are all talk until some nugget truth comes to light after the fact and often never does.

I like the "I can beat, you" "You're scared, ducking" whatever, that's par for the course, the obligatory "My opponent is on PED's so even if he beats me it doesn't count" shit is going to drag the sport into an abyss and the limp spine MMA media will come running like nerds at a whore house when the word is mentioned in terms of gossip and innuendo.

Punish the failures and otherwise just stick to the hype that doesn't cripple the legitmacy of your fight.

"I’ve never been caught red-handed or anything."

Detective Morgan - PED's or not, he will spank Mendes Phone Post 3.0

Who knows what VADA Aldo looks like?

For all we know he might be on steroids, EPO, HGH, clen, thyroid hormones, stimulants, PCT when needed etc.

Whilst Mendes might just be on regular steroids.

They might also both be clean.

This is the pharmaceutical era of MMA, many fighters have two versions a clean one and an enhanced one. Some will drop away more than others with testing.

My husband and I have been big Aldo fans since some of his first fights. We knew he'd make it big. He just had a skill that was unmatched and has only continued to improve. This whole PED thing is just a cheap attempt to get in Aldo's head. TBH, I'd be pissed too if I was Aldo after training years, keeping clean, and making it to the top only to have some jackball taint your career because it's the only way he thinks he has a chance at winning. This is denialist to imagine that the reasons for PED accusations are for excuse making.

It's clear as day PED use is rampant in MMA.

No I'm not saying it's not a problem man, but if everyone is using the issue to hype their fights against guys that haven't failed a test, then what fight legitimacy do you have left, BECAUSE I AGREE IT'S EVERYWHERE.

But if a guy hasn't failed "Yet" then all the gossip does is lower consumer confidence in the hype of the fight.

By all means crucify guys who fail, and up the tests, let the media talk about it, Dana, etc, talk about it with Barnett, Vitor, Chael etc. But with guys who haven't failed all these guy are doing is making their fights look dirty without the evidence when they don't have to because people are still willing to believe that their favorites are clean. I saw go with it until people fail, or everyone has to come forward and take responsibility for where this has gotten.

THe cherry picking is just going to overshadow the fights without any failed tests like it has for cycling outisde of times of failed tests, it will never likely recover to where it was.. The burden of this should be on the media in terms of MMA in general, THe UFC, the testing companies etc, but if every guy just accuses his opponent of roiding and saying he doesn't and then the opposite does all it does it create reasons to get fed up with the sport before they actually fail tests. If there are really 70% of guys dirty then there's also 30% clean and they deserve to have fights happen away from the gossip, so for now let the testing happen, crucify the losers but gossip amongst CURRENTLY clean fighters is just going to hurt the product.

And excuse making is a nasty side effect of letting accusation without failure that will multiply like wildwife with this.
