Chad Mendes is without a doubt the current number one contender in the featherweight division. The only problem is that the only two losses of his professional MMA career came in title fights to current champion Jose Aldo. With his most recent win against number four ranked Ricardo Lamas, where does that put Mendes? Well according to him, perhaps in a another title shot:

"I've been trying to figure out who I would fight after this, if I were to go out there and beat Ricardo. The only thing that makes sense in my mind is back for that title," Mendes said at Saturday afternoon's post-fight press conference. "We've just got to wait to see what happens with Aldo-McGregor and Frankie-Faber. So we'll see.
Ummm, no. How about he beat Frankie, or Cub, or Connor first. Actually preferable at least 2 of them. Not sure why some fighters don't think they should have to fight top guys or win more than once to earn their shots.
Cub Swanson wins 6 in a row and it's still not enough? He's expected to go through Frankie to make it 7 in a row before he gets a second shot at Aldo? I hope they make Chad win at least 3 more and again, 2/3 to be Frankie, Cub, or Connor. See if he belongs up there or not.

Cub also lost two more fights after losing to Aldo. It took him at least at least up to the Poirer fight to establish that he was actually a potential contender again. Clearly this is not the case with Mendes, who just destroyed the #5 FW, and has never lost to anyone but the champ. Not sure how you think there's any question as to whether her "belongs up there or not."
Frankie is going to beat Faber easily. So, he's definitely not getting an immediate. If Aldo wins, he's not getting a shot for a while. Right now, he should be Connor's biggest fan. Connor has the chance to make all these guys who Aldo had his way with relevent again.
If Connor ran the table of Aldo, Edgar, Mendes, and then Aldo again. I think his legacy would already surpass that of any else's but maybe Jon Jones and GSP.
Collin Reuter - I really don't understand how you guys can just assume Edgar will best Urijah... Saying Edgar will beat Urijah easily is ridiculous
Rivera was giving Uriah all he could handle before the eye poke. That was surprising to me and I wouldn't be surprised if Urijah has started to slide a little now. He's been fighting a long time and it's bound to happen at some point. Edgar still looks as hungry as ever and he's going be the bigger man in there against Faber.

There are 3 people in the top 5 Mendes has never fought. And 1 of them he's lost 2 twice. So, Mendes has shown he can beat 1 out of the top 5 ranked fighters. How about we see if he can beat any others?
For the record, I think he probably can, but that's why they fight. If Aldo wins, Mendes can fight Connor. If Aldo loses, he'll get an immediate rematch so Mendes can fight Faber (or even Cub).
