I have a question for the UG...are people born mentally tough, or do you become mentally tough after training for so long?
The reason I ask is because I have seen some of my training partners just mentally give up at the sound of the instructor saying, "We are going hard today!"
On the flip side of the coin, I have seen some people just come to life at the sound of that same sentence.
What do you think?

I know my eyes light up on hard sparing days - those are the days where you learn the most about your strenghts and weeknesses.
However, I have been in the situation where I am shot and my coach tells me he is gonna smoke us on cardio - sometimes I am less than happy to hear that.
Mental toughness is probably one of the most important characteristics of a fighter - being able to face your fear and press forward - is very admirable.
You hear of fighters just having alot of heart...would you say that heart and mental toughness are in the same boat?

I am pretty sure that it is like most other personal qualities, everyone has a genetic foundation that you are born with, but it is also affected by what you experience.

Yes.

i think mental toughness is what sets a great fighter and a good fighter apart.
Mental toughness is not just in cardio and such... although cardio is usually the biggest factor. If you train BJJ, you will see alot of guys...two different types. Some guys you get in an armbar, or triangle, or choke, and they will not tap for shit. You can put them to sleep, or pop their arm, and they refuse to give up, or squirm for any chance to get out of the move.... that is mental toughness.
Alot of other guys are mentally weak. They get tired within a couple minutes, you sweep them, and mount them and they've allready mentally given up. They let you get any choke u want, and tap out before you even sink it in. These guys usually get their hands to tap, before the transition takes place. Like as soon as ur performing a triangle, the guy gets his hand ready to tap, when he could be using that same hand to push your hips down and stand the fuck up.
ya if u were raised like a spoiled little sissy boy most likely ul tap like a little girl at the first sign of any pain. The tougher guys who stick it out through a submission usually lived badass lives, most likely in huntington beach
I don't think not tapping makes you mentally tough...I think it makes you very stupid. I don't like getting tapped out...but I'm not willing to risk some sort of injury in training because I have an ego trip
^^^^WORDS OF A SPOILED SISSY
Calm down Sly...we're just having a conversation. Just because someone doesn't agree with you doesn't mean you need to get pissy
Someone that does not tap on practice is not mentally tough, that would be mentally stupid and insecure. If you do not tap in mma competition and then get injured and loose anyway you are either inexperienced or really stubborn, and think you are unbeatable.
It is ok to tap for mentally tough people, if you are mentally tough you should be able to admit that you are not unbeatable. But if you tap without reason or turn your back when your opponent is pounding you from the month that could be signs of not being mentally tough.
Well put Assassin!!!
Im talking about you getting mount. Attempting a choke from mount, so u could get ur opponents arm up, then transitioning to armbar...and on the transition the guy tapping, and not even attempting to get out. Or u going for a sidechoke, and instead of defending at all, the guy taps before u even secure any type of choke at all. Thats who im talking about is a sissy. Not anyone who taps.
everyone taps
Then I agree, the same goes for strikes.
yep... I dont understand guys like this. I think dont you have any pride in yourself, to atleast go through some type of struggle before completely giving up? If u want to tap so easily, then why are u here?
Go fly a kite
Tapping is one thing but giving up is another. You can see it in any sport, the runner that can't give the final kick when he is a little behind versus when he is ahead and seems to have all the energy in the world. I think that you become tough but agree that there is definitly some predisposition you are born with. Being mentally tough means being able to suck it up and go when the tank is empty. Anyone that does not tap to a perfect armbar either was not in a perfect armbar or has a broken arm afterwards.
"I think that you become tough but agree that there is definitly some predisposition you are born with."
Of course some of it is in the genes.
