MysteryOpponent - I've been familiar with him for a long time, but never really checked out his music until a few months ago.
I'm not really into all the Ziltoid stuff, but his live performances of "Deadhead" and "The Death of Music" on the Royal Albert Hall DVD are just fucking incredible. Vocally, what I like about him is his screams are actually intelligible, and musically, he's not afraid to experiment. Very Zappa-like in some ways.
^^ That performance at the Royal Albert Hall was sick. I'm digging this Devon Townsend Project and wondering how the fuck this ever escaped me back in the day. I think what might have happened is during my metal, punk, grunge, kickass days in 93 I got locked up for a while. When I came out I calmed down, moved west and started jiving to the motown and funk vibe because I needed the happy music to keep my spirits positive, lol! Moved into the mountains and lost touch with all things radio for a few years. I'm not sure, some good music escaped me during a stretch of years, that's all I know.
He has a lot of different stuff out there that is really hard to get into. His experimental stuff is over my head but most of it is really cool.
His vocals are simply amazing. Everything from clean to operatic to growls and he does them as well as anyone. Steve Vai heard his solo/demo stuff and had him sing in Sex and Religion.
Check out his B side tune Juno. He's a BC boy and it about being a Canadian. Very cool tune.
Used to be a big fan and just sort of grew out of his music. DTB has some good albums but the newer stuff I'm not really into. Pretty much the end of it was Ziltoid. Was going to see him do Ziltoid live in London last year but we that got scrapped.
Met him a handful of times and he's always been pretty chill.
Anyway I miss the Christmas cards he would send every year. Also the struggle of Canadian post in actually getting my shit across the border whenever I would order from hevydevy.
Met him and Gene at a Smitty's pancake house once. Then saw them play later that night in front of about 20 people. Was sad for the turnout but happy that we got a semi private concert.
Absolutely underrated. He's my favourite vocalist as he can do it all and I love basically everything he's done.
That being said, I was bitterly disappointed with Z2. It sounded like a bunch of B-sides. New album is out in September and I'm hoping he's back on track.
I met Gene (nicest dude ever) and Byron from SYL when they were here with Fear Factory and they both told me they'd do SYL again in a heartbeat, but Devin has no interest.
SYL is one of my favorite bands. I caught on to them late but was lucky enough to see them at an all day metal concert with gwar a couple years before they quit.
One of my top 3 artists of all time, EASY. Just listened to Ocean Machine today. I really wish he'd at least tour with SYL one last time, as I missed out on seeing them live. I actually had tickets once, when they were opening for Hatebreed, and the show got cancelled day of bc Hatebreeds singer's dad died.
Very jealous that you met him, I'd be shitting myself.

Dude, I tried not to be a total fanboy so I kept it short. When I sat down at the table my kids knew something was weird. My daughter kept asking why I was smiling and I told her I had just met one of my favourite metal guys ever.
She didn't believe that he was a metal guy cause she thought he looked so "normal". He was super friendly, shook my hand and asked what my name was. I guess it's cool that at 41 I still have stuff that makes me feel like a kid.

Yea, he looks a bit more normal since he ditched the skullet years ago. So dope that u met him...and yea...I'm 35 and id geek out just as hard!
Since we now basically have a DT circle jerk going on....top 3 DT albums?
Stray, I can honestly say I've never heard anything like that video you posted in the OP. I'm not a metal guy but that was some cool shit (is that even metal? I have no idea what that would be called!?)
I've only heard of devin townsend and SYL but I couldn't name any of their music. I'll have to check some more of it out now.

Hard for me but I'd probably go
Biomech/Ocean Machine Ziltoid 1 SYL - Alien
I'm going to say Ocean Machine: Biomech, Accelerated Evolution, and Epicloud.
Casualties of Cool is really good, too, and shows a different side of him.
