The last time I went to Mexico (CanCun) was 25 years ago.
Since then, I’ve read that it can be dangerous for tourists, especially American.
What is it like now? Considering a trip to a place a little south of Can Cun. It’s all inclusive. I’m not worried about myself but there are others going and I worry about the girls off by themselves.

skip the resort and go to Isla Mujeres....its a 30 minute ferry ride from Cancun. Bettrer food, better beach.

Rhymenoceros - Totally safe if you stick to resorts. I'm sure there are some very safe tourist towns as well, like San Miguel de Allende.In any case it’s not a great idea for anyone to wander off the resort by themselves. d
I think exactly the opposite. The resorts have had incidents where people have been drugged or died from tainted alcohol or food. I like to watch out for myself. We always rent a house look after our own food and drinks.
That, and I hate being part of a huge herd at a resort.
Went to san jose del cabo last july- just a string of resorts on the beach, perfectly safe. We wandered a little into town, no big deal, seemed to be mostly under construction of more resorts and vacation rentals.
cabo san lucas - did that for a day, seemed tourist trashy and fullnof vomit floor bars
....and if you’re not looking for drugs or going places you wouldn’t go at home and if you’re not a rude condescending asshole, you’re just as safe in Mexico as you are at home.

I like Costa Rica better, but they are a lot different. If your a beach/resort and underwater/scuba/snorkeling person Mexico is much better for that. Costa Rica is better at everything else......but its not as cheap either.
I would think Belize would be more comparable to Mexico on the resort and beach front side of things (but ive never been there....just a guess)

4 Mile Mexican Island that is nothing like the main land...and its almost as cheap.
IMO Cozumel is the only place in Mexico where you don’t have to worry about getting caught up in some bullshit.
Rather than read a bunch of anecdotal stories from people who visited Mexico without any problems, I’d suggest reading up on the state dept travel advisories.
