This week on Talking Tough Mike Pierce played the roll of co-host for the entire show. When asked about Jake Shields's performance at UFC 144 against Yoshihiro Akiyama Mike was pretty blunt and critical about what he thought of his UFC welterweight colleague. Could we potentially see a match up between the two?
ttt
Im just astonished by the lack of knowledge about MMA from fans and fighters. it really makes me appreciate GSp more and his intelligence of the sport.
Jake is not a 170er thats why at 170 he is one demensional. He came from 185 not just cutting weight but losing muscle and dieting. Losing major amounts of mass which resulted in him getting 10 folds weaker and makinf his wrestling ten fodls weaker. Yet people cant seam to understand that or refuse to understand that. Jake is far from one demensional at 185 and atm 185 is the only place he should fight at.
Remember again GSP feared moving up because he didnt know how his body would respond if he cut back down to 170 and as you can see this is a perfect example for him not to move up.

Awesome post. Everyone seems to forget so quickly about Jake's streak when he at his natural weight. Okami, Condit, Daley. When he finally moved up to to 185 when he realised his frame was growing he was still a bad motherfucker. Everyone seems to forget how he survived a beating against Hendo (one of the GOATs in this sport) and then dominated him for 4 rounds.
Im one of those people that believe he would have had a better shot at Anderson than GSP

I totally agree with this. Jake has looked slow and weak in all of his fights at 170 in the UFC.
Jake isn't one dimensional, he has good wrestling and great jiu jitsu. His striking mechanics are bad but they are better than Akiyama's.
Also, how did Shields "come from" 185? The guy has been 170-175 (ROR tournament) for just about all his career. He challenged himself by fighting at 185 but the kid is a welterweight, no doubt. He also did better against GSP than Jon Fitch, Matt Hughes and BJ Penn.
Mike Pierce is just talking shit here. But for what it's worth, Pierce is a monster and deserved the decision over Koscheck.

I seem to remember that he gained weight when he switched to Strikeforce and this increase in weight was opportunistic.
Elias Cepeda - Jake isn't one dimensional, he has good wrestling and great jiu jitsu. His striking mechanics are bad but they are better than Akiyama's.

Granted that GSP did admit that Fitch still stands to be his toughest fight even after 129.

he did come from 185 not 170 or 175. to fight Kampmann. You can chalk it up how ever you want but 170 and 185 are way different and im sure that Jakes fight prior to Kampmann was a 185er. You're either misunderstanding me or you dont seem to understand how a cut down to a nother weight class can effect you in multiple ways.
Warriormmd -Eventually you're body grows accustom to that weight and you start adding mass since you're not worrying about keeping youre weight at a certain level.Elias Cepeda - Jake isn't one dimensional, he has good wrestling and great jiu jitsu. Jake was a 185er for quite some time enough for it to effect his cut down.
Yes, Shields fought a few times at middleweight, and yes, it looked to have affected him against Kampmann. Since then, I can't see that it has made a difference. He is who he is. Good wrestling, great jiu jitsu (especially top game) and gutsy, active if mechanically rigid stand up striking. Show me a fight where he hasn't looked like that, at any weight.
Warrior, Fitch sure was a tough fight for GSP - GSP brutalized him more than he's maybe done to anyone before and Fitch still kept coming. Shields lasted just as long without taking a third of that punishment. Just saying. I think Fitch is a better fighter than Shields but it is what it is.
Jake was initially 170 pounder. His last fight at 170 was against Daley then he moved up to face better competition and so him and Nick wouldn't be at the same weight in Strike Force. With that being said I think the shift down from 185 has affected him. I would have liked to see him stay at 185 as well
Shields still looked bigger than Sexy at 170.
Shields fought the majority of his career at 170 but i guess really grew into 185 while at SF.

Spoken like a true know-it-all
His arms looks skinny and he didn't seem to have a good deal of success against akiyama strength wise although to akiyamas credit he is a judo guy with strong hips which I'm sure neutralized Jakes takedown. I never say this when it comes to MMA fighters but he needs to bulk up a bit if at all possible and go to 185.
