Mino's spinning choke

For those who missed Mino's spinning choke in the Pride PPV or are interested in the step-by-step: http://www.graciemag.com/news/04071203.asp

I've been practicing this tech on wrestlers who also do Judo and love to shoot.

On people who suck at tourtling this should be a good move. I'll definetely try it out. Doubt it will work on any advance trutler thou. The again when people are shooting the are shooting.

it's a reverse kata gatame.

"it's a reverse kata gatame"

I've actually never thought about it like that, but yeah. I think Mino called it the Anaconda?

The keys for me are the switching of the legs to get the guy to roll (if you dont post and shoot the opposite leg through fast enough, the guy wont roll sometimes and end up in kami shiho), and the walk/spin towards uke after the choke is applied (ie. last pic. It's this walking motion that tightens the choke, since there is no body weight involved like a kata gatame). Other then that it's pretty straight forward I think.

There are a couple of choke entries similar to this move you can use when wearing a judogi, but end up in gi chokes/pin combination.

Nice move on Mino's part!

Ben R.

in wrestling it's called a barbwire and is used to pin usually doe after a gator roll

yeah I've heard it called a gator roll in wrestling.

in fact i've seen it before in bjj in Rigan Machado's b&w bjj book.

hard angle to finish the choke, especially when there is a gi involved.. but, so long as your are tight and really have it cranked in, it can finish people off.

"It is not really a reverse kata-gatame, although it looks like it"

CBT, I've done the choke on people in sparring. The choke is a head-and-arm choke, so it is a type of Kata Gatame. The position of the attacker is 180 degrees from the traditional position, so that would make it a reverse Kata Gatame. You do go off on an angle slightly when the rolling choke is done, but you also go off on an angle with traditional Kata Gatame.

traditional Kata Gatame.

kata gatame is one of my favorite submissions. I get most of them from my guard, not the traditional position either.

I saw a similar technique in Techniques of Judo, but they use the gi for the choke.

I was very impressed with Mino's use of this tchnique. I believe he's actually finished 2 opponents with this in Pride fights. Thank you for posting the step by step.
