During his loss at UFC Fight Night Boston, Matt Mitrione was unintentionally poked in the eye twice, and punched in it. He will now undergo surgery to fix the damage:

Matt Mitrione is scheduled to undergo surgery on his broken right orbital bone early next week.

Mitrione, who lost in controversial fashion to Travis Browne via TKO on Sunday following two eye pokes, told MMAFighting.com that he is unsure how long he'll be sidelined for following surgery, however according to Mitrione, the good news is the injury is "non-weight bearing and has significant blood flow."

Following the loss, the MMA community was split regarding how the apparent accidental fouls should have been handled by referee Gary Forman. Should a point have been taken away? Should it have been ruled a no contest following the second eye poke? Mitrione expressed equal frustration on Tuesday's episode of The MMA Hour about how the situation was handled.

"It shouldn’t be up to me, the guy who lives his life to compete to make a decision," he said. "It should be up to the commission, the doctors and the referee to realize the dude is fighting with one eye closed, and he’s complaining about seeing double.

shogunhoohah - I guess it wasn't just the eyepoke.

They showed the punch that did the damage, the question was did he eat that punch because he couldn't see out of his eye that had been poked.

Get well soon Matt, facing some eye ops myself this year for very different reasons, so feeling for ya my friend! Phone Post 3.0

Heal strong Matt!

Would love to hear veteran refs point of view on this but why do warnings exist for this still ? Are any fightere nor clear on the "don't blind your opponent" rule? Eye poke should br automatic point & fine. Its practically a strategy since theres no fear of consequence

Poor guy, shitty way for a fight to go, to get pawed in the eye the whole time until eventually the other guy uses it to set up a flush right hand to an already damaged eye.

hoping for a quick recovery.
