It seems like the majority of people oppose the team concept in the IFL. Why is this?
It seems to me that just as the sport of mma progressed from style vs style, we are now seeing a progression from fighter vs fighter to team vs team, even in pride/UFC.
Miletich FS, Chute Boxe, Brazilian Top Team, Lion's Den, etc. Every top fighter comes from a top camp. As fighters end their careers, most of them are moving into coaching/training roles (see: Miletich, Couture, Shamrock) to continue to build their own reputations. How many times have we all heard "... trains with {insert former champ name} and the other members of team {insert team name}" when referring to a new up and coming fighter?
Personally, I think the team concept will help put MMA alongside mainstream sports with the casual fans, as well as make for more exciting championships (for instance, maybe you can't beat Fedor, but can you beat his team?).
As a final note, I'm hoping they score team MMA in a way similar to high school wrestling. Something like: Knockout/submission : 8 team points, Major decision (say, winning by more than 5pts on judges cards) : 5 points, Unanimous Decision: 3 points, Split decision: 1 point. This would give fighters more incentive to try to finish the fight, making it more exciting for the fans. It also makes for very climatic fights, such as if it is the final fight and not only does a fighter need to win, but he needs to get atleast 5 team points for the team to win.
