Like the USA until recently, the legal status of mixed martial arts depended on the state. The sport was banned in Western Australia, but that has now been reversed.

9news.com.au has the story.

Western Australia's opposition leader doesn't like cage fighting and hasn't been in a fight since he was 10, but has lifted Labor's ban on it because it will make mixed martial arts safer.

Mark McGowan said he had overturned the opposition's policy after consulting with WA's mixed martial arts community and watching events himself.

He also spoke to Victorian Sports Minister John Eren, who lifted a ban himself last year.

Mr. McGowan said neither he nor Premier Colin Barnett could outlaw the sport if they wanted to, because of its massive global popularity.

Allowing the high mesh safety barriers used in the octagon would prevent the risk of serious injury mixed martial artists in WA faced where they only fight in boxing rings and can be easily thrown out of the 1.2 metre high areas.

He also saw the opportunity for WA to make money if an Ultimate Fighting Championship event came to town.

"I understand many people like this sport, I understand many people don't like this sport - it's not my thing, it's not my cup of tea ... I haven't been in a fight since I was 10," Mr McGowan told reporters.

"It is the fastest growing sport in the world, it has a massive international audience that can help promote tourism industries overseas and that's a good thing.

"If a UFC event was to come to Western Australia, I would welcome it - it's a big sporting event that brings huge attention to your state through a worldwide audience that diversifies the economy and makes sure of a bigger tourism audience."

Well, at least it happened. I have read some crazy articles bashing MMA from Australia on here. Hopefully this helps improve the stigma. Phone Post 3.0

Great news can't wait for a UFC event in Perth! Phone Post 3.0

Awesome! Phone Post 3.0

Perth arena would and will hold a great fight night. Phone Post 3.0

It better fucking happen soon, also when they were talking about this on the news last night, guess what mma highlights they were showing,
A bloody ronda getting ktfo.

Not the best look Phone Post 3.0

The only problem with this is that labour are in opposition not in power.
Good on them for taking this stance but it means nothing if they don't get elected. Phone Post 3.0

Do you stupid fucks who write as the 'Underground Blog' actually do any fucking research before you write your fucking garbage?

Seriously, this is pathetic excuse for writing and journalism in general, and this site is worse off for having this fucking rubbish and the people who write it in this capacity.

Let me school you cunts on some shit.

1) Mark McGowan is not the premier of Western Australia therefore he cannot 'unban' any fucking thing. If your retarded, useless self actually read the very fucking article you linked to your pathetic excuse for a fucking blog post, you would have seen on the FIRST FUCKING LINE that he is the 'opposition leader'.

Now I understand that if you're from the US, you might not know what that means, but if you had any fucking brains in you, you would've figured out that 'opposition' means that you're on the other side of something. In this case, the opposite side of the governing party. Dumb fucking idiot.

2)He stated that IF he becomes premier, he would like to allow the Octagon in MMA competition. So no, MMA has NOT been unbanned you retarded dickstains.

3) This brings me to my next point - MMA is NOT banned in WA...Dumb fucking blog writing cunt. The OCTAGON, which anti-MMA dickfaces call a 'cage' is banned in WA. MMA fights are allowed to take place, but only in a ring. So NOTHING has been reversed, since the sport itself is not atually banned you tithead.

Not unbanned. Opposition leader has committed to lifting the ban if his party is elected next March. Phone Post 3.0

Bruno not pulling any punches! If the ban really is lifted one day I'm sure one of us will start a thread about it. Stand down UG we got this Phone Post 3.0

Yeh mate I don't really venture here much anymore, but I thought that with all the complaints about how shit and inaccurate the dumb fuck UG blog writers are that some improvements might have been made.

Things actually look to have gotten worse.

UG Blog are just as thick as the fucktards trying to make an argument against this whole thing.

MMA is perfectly legal in WA, it's the use of the octagon that's banned. It has to be contested in a boxing ring (go figure).

How hard is it to do a little research? Phone Post 3.0

No ufc event for us any time soon.. If it ever does get past it will sell out fast.. How many does Perth arena hold? Phone Post 3.0

15500 apparently...I wonder if a UFC event could hold a few hundred more given that the Octagon is usually smaller than most stages or basketball courts.

Put a card with a few moderately well-known fighters and it will sell out in minutes.

I think the ufc would be surprised at how fast they could sell that out. Fingers crossed we get to see it one day! Phone Post 3.0

What about the Perth Convention centre? I remember an mma event held there a few years ago. Phone Post 3.0
Arena is about as close to perfect as you can get for MMA. Seating is nice and steep, it can take 15K people and the venue itself is world class Phone Post 3.0

I'm not sure exactly how much, but I think it would be far less (like, at least half) of Perth Arena. I think it would be a good venue if One Championship ever decided to hold an Aussie event (they have a fair few Aussie fighters on their roster now). For the UFC though, I think the Perth Arena would be the far superior option.
