mma with the gi?

How would mma change if the fighters not only could, but were required to wear a gi? I think this would be interesting to see. Unless you're on the beach or in a trailer park you probably walk around with some sort of a shirt on, so I think seeing what works when you and your opponent are fully clothed would be valuable.

My guess is we'd see more judo, bjj, and hockey fighting (left hand grabs, right hand punches).

For some reason this idea intrigues me. I also wouldn't be surprised if Japan has tried it.

Sure the Gracies have footage of them beating the shit out of Karateka all wearing Gis, but the idea of today's MMA guys, MANY of who have Gi training already, trying it would interest me.

They have. Lumax Cup I believe. Early to mid 90's

there was a few pride shows where guys were fighting with gi's

I think you have a valid point, but when's the last time you walked around on the street wearing a thick Japanese kimono and big cloth belt on your waist?

While not a "thick Japanese kimono" or cloth belt, there are those of us that part of the year and even all year long have cold winters and people wear THICK clothing...thermals, flannels, winter jackets, leather jackets, as well as wear belts. The grips and chokes from Gi training would translate into self-defense or street applications.

The gi can work for or against the person wearing it, depending on who they are and who they are fighting. I agree with inf0. If they both agreed, let em do it.

Kazuhiro Nakamura got KO'd....by wanderlei when he tried taking his gi off..works for some...but not all

I think it's safe to say Nakamura got KOed because he did something stupid DURING the match, not BECAUSE he wore a Gi.

He got KO'd because he attempted to throw his gi top off in the middle of the match. Also Wanderlei was not wearing a gi. This thread is more about both fighters in a gi.

I did and screwed it up...I fail at the internets.

Isn't combat sambo basicly MMA with a Gi?

Combat Sambo anyone? You just described Combat Sambo.

just the gi tops and more like gi shorts

Combat Sambo uniforms are Kurtka (gi top), shorts, and Sambofki (wrestling shoes with a shoft sole).

The major diffrence is the scoring.  Combat Sambo still uses the point system used in Sport Sambo compeitions.  i.e points for throws, hold downs, etc.  You get points for knockdowns as well.  If i hit you with a punch and you fall flat on your back (same as if I threw you) you'll get four points.

I've done several, lots of fun.

btw the old Lumax cup was awesome!

Good thread. I've used someone's t-shirt to choke them out before. You just have to grab a big handful of fabric or else it'll tear.

MMA with clothing would change the game, but only if both fighters were to wear the same pants and shirt/jackets.
