I was curious, but what do you guys think about the amount of schools doing no-gi, gi, or both? Do you think there is more no-gi being trained here in the US or gi?
Dude! You a reading way too much into it! Is the question that difficult to answer? It's merely a question asking your opinion of whether gi work is taught more over no-gi in the US! It's not hard bud!
jjay, I will give you my opinion of the SoCal scene based on what I've seen.
I'd say the majority of clubs here now roll without the gi (or at least have the option for no-gi practice). Hope this helps!
Seemed like a good question to me. :)
If your just taking a poll, we don't do gi over at my place. It's strictly, shirt, maybe a sweat shirt. As a matter of fact, I would venture to say that I have worn a gi on maybe 5-8 occasions. However, visiting guys that are primarily gi based do show up to do some mat time. They usually roll with their gi, my guys do not out of personal preference. Not to say that the gi game is not any better than no gi, just a poll I guess.
ReneH,
I would say this is somewhat of a poll. I was planning to use the information for a thesis I'm doing for my MBA degree. My topic is on methods of successful martial arts schools in the modern world. It's somewhat a comparison to the business of martial arts back in the day throughout history till today and what they do to survive and become profitable.
Thanks for all of you opinions guys.
I've rolled in a gi one time, ever. If I wanted rug-burn from grappling I'd grappled on carpet instead of mats.
People say to me, hey it's cool that you do no Gi. I think that is very weird. No Gi? I also take a no Gi shower every day and I drive my jeep with the no Gi style! I don'tdo no Gi grappling any more than I do no Gi everything else.
There is no such thing as no Gi submission wrestling.Submssion Westling, Catch, Folkstyle, Freestyle and Greco Roman are all done with no Gi. There is no need to specify it as no Gi.
Hey, Rulon Gardner does no Gi Greco Roman Wrestling! No Gi? No shit!
I also do no Tutu grappling! and no dress shoes either.
LMFAO@Kansetsu.I couldn't agree more.Well said.
In defense of Catchy,he makes a very valid point.BJJ is the most practised art out there. As is Sambo and Judo, which all use a gi(or kurtka in sambos case),so obviously there is going to be more gi's being worn than not. It's a no brainer really.Think about it!!!
I'd say gi training is more important to train but your focus should be a little different depending on what your competing in.
If your focus is on mma or sub grappling I would say you need to use the gi but when rolling dont rely on the cloth grips to help you,The gi tightens your game and gives your opponent alot of options which will make you better.
Also try to gain top position and dominant positions constantly then your partner has to catch up to you all the time and cannot strike with alot of power if the strikes are included.
Just my thoughts
100% no gi for me. However, I could see value in doing some gi work to simulate a self-defense situation where jackets are being worn.
I do 50/50.
"If I wanted rug-burn from grappling I'd grappled on carpet instead of mats."
Scuffler,
Actually, for quite awhile, we used to roll on a carpeted surface and did get rug burns all the time! We were all glad when the time came to buy mats, what a relief.
The Texas weather is very unforgiving, which is one of the reasons why we roll without anything resembling a gi. Heck, it was about 77 degrees today, very humid, the gi gets very uncomfortable very quickly. Most people primarily wear shirts and shorts year round, so our training kinda mirrors real world conditions.
I think some of you have missed the point of this thread.I don't think it was about whether or not gi is better to train than no-gi or vice versa, but whether we think gi is used more often in the US than no-gi.
ReneH, sounds like we've had alot of the same experiences. When we first stated training grappling we also grappled on a thin carpet with a very thim pad between it and a concrete floor. Those were the days :)
I train in a Sambo Jacket (Kurtka) twice per week for our Sombo classes. Twice per week I train without the jacket in our Catch Wrestling classes. I also train once per week in street clothes in our self-defense class and sometimes we wear big shirts, no shirt, t-shirt or a regular jacket for that class.
In my area, the no-gi classes at a Baton Rouge MMA gym, are getting more crowded, than the gi classes.
As far as the regular BJJ schools, I can't speak for all of them, but I think the gi still rules. I'm looking forward to CACC getting the respect it deserves, in a more mainstream way.
Catchy,I didn't ask a question?????
You had me wondering there!!!
