More Olympic diversity bull

In 2012, reigning world champion Jordan Wieber finished plenty high enough in women's gymnastics to proceed to final round despite not performing her best. Sadly, the rule to promote diversity in the finals kept her out because each country can only have 2 in the finals.

It happened again this year when returning Olympic champion Gabby Douglas places third in the qualifying round behind teammates Simone Biles and Aly Raisman and gets shut out of finals, even though she finished ahead of the 20 or so other girls.

Before I get hit with the wrong forum stuff...returning Olympic wrestling champion and 4 time world champion Jordan Burroughs (who has expressed interest in MMA) gets beat and bumped out of medal contention b/c the best 2 wrestlers get put in the same pool. You see, they don't seed the guys although they have been wrestling each other all yr and everyone knows the pecking order, so to speak.

The Olympics does this crap in the name of diversity, to have more countries represented on the podium. Once again "diversity" rears it's ugly head. Not fair to athletes who train their most of their lives only to have their dreams crushed by this foolishness. In no way is this what the spirit of the Olympics and competition in general is supposed to be about.

Wah waaaah waaaah OP

Anyways, Aly Raisman in ESPN's body issue

I ain't crying, I don't have a dog in this race. I can only dream that I ever could have been in such a race. But in whatever race or competition I would ever be in or view, it seems a prerequisite that it should be fair and based on merit/performance. I am just pointing out another ridiculous case of diversity.

Thanks for the pic, add some of Alicia Sacramone while your at it, she posed in a similar fashion last Olympics .

That is a bull shit rule, should be the best 64, 32 etc competitors in each sport for the title to be the pinnacle.

Forgive my ignorance but who decides the rules for wrestling in the Olympics? Is it the same body as the worlds? Phone Post 3.0

Another thing I don't get is why in some sports, a country is allowed to send their top 3 athletes, while in others only their top 2.

For instance, only the top 2 placers from each country's Olympic trials in a swimming event are allowed to go to the Olympics, even if the person who finishes third had the 3rd fastest time in history.

But in track and field, most of the time a country can send 3 athletes. For instance, the US women just got the Gold, Silver & Bronze in the 100m hurdles, but could only send its top 2 swimmers for each of the swimming events.

Who decides this?
