Chuck Norris was onto something. We need something thats more like this...
...but not like this...
or this...
Schrute Boxe - or this...
lol. thats what theyre currently using.
The first pic would never work. If someone went for a driving take down they would go flying right out of the ring.
as far as the WCL-style "ring" goes, maybe extend the angled perimeter with a yellow zone for limited grappling and a red "out-of-bounds" zone for fighter safety. might have to play with angles a bit to help keep fighters from falling out.
the out-of-bounds red zone would cause resets, but arent refs already having to stop the action a lot anyways during wall-n-stalls? also, removing the fencing makes the fight as viewer-friendly as it gets. i've sat cageside at the UFC and have had to look at the big screens cuz i cant see thru that damn fencing. also, the sponsorship opportunities on the angled perimeter would be amazing.
platform like wrestling imo...like shamrocks old event

thats why i am saying that we need a way to make it work in the thread title. gotta make adjustments and re-designs to build a better mouse trap.

idk, I just don't see it working. The ring/cage needs something to contain the fighters. There has to be some sort of a "wall" either ropes or a cage, or a fish net.
theres no wall in wrestling...if you take away the wall it will force wrestlers to complete clean takedowns in the middle of the fighting area instead of pushing their opponent against a fence
you can do things like deduct points for stalling for fighters that back away from the center area...force them to remain in the pocket

exactly the type of idea i'm thinking. if the out-of-bounds area is large enough and/or pitched at the right angle, fighters would never (or rarely) "fall out."
how about a cage with lexan walls?
DirkH - how about a cage with lexan walls?
or a lexan cube!
I remember Frank Shamrock had started a fight league where there where no ropes or fence. I saw Mike Swick fight on one of te events, it looked freaking awesome.
^^shootbox
here is how you can make it work...
make 3 colored circles on the platform...1. inbounds 2. warning 3. out of bounds
everything that happens in inbounds is all good
if you voluntarily step back into the warning area, after a certain number of instances, you are docked a point- this would not include where your opponent pushes you into the warning area
the warning area should give enough incentive for the fighters to engage and stay in the inbounds area...for those occasions where the action does go out of bounds, the action is restarted inbounds- just like amateur wrestling

Are there videos?
I support any decent alternative to the cage.
the_shrike - RIP Couture's career
Wouldn't wrestlers just repeatedly push their opponent out of bounds sumo-style to rack up points? I'm sure Couture would be happy to do that...

What if a fighter gets rocked and steps back into the out of bounds area? What then? Just take a point away?
If that's the case every time I get hurt I'll just run to the out of bounds area and loss a point.

yup...just like a rocked fighter can kick the balls, or bite or gouge the eyes if he wanted to
yamma had a good idea
