Last night Dana said he would still put Anderson Silva above GSP on the p4p list. Here's my argument for, um, not doing that.
Yeah yeah yeah. Silva hasn't lost in 5 years. GSP lost 3 years ago. But also remember GSP has never been caught in a flying scissor heel hook either. Silva has four losses and never avenged a damn one of them. St. Pierre avenged both his losses.
Silva may have moved up in weight for a couple hand picked fights, but they made Thiago Alves cut down to welterweight to fight Georges. They brought someone to his weight class.
I feel like the only thing stopping St. Pierre from getting the p4p unquestionably is the Serra loss. But he still only has 2 losses which had been avenged.
On top of that, look at the records. St. Pierre has fought way better opponents than Silva and looked better beating them. I remember Silva getting beat up in the Henderson fight before pulling out the sub, also the Lutter fight and the Sonnen fight.
I'm pretty sure if this fight ever happens. GSP will mop the floor with Anderson Silva. It's just too bad Vitor's gonna do it first.
So taking an opponent to a decision looks better than convincingly finishing someone? That is definitely a different way of looking at things.
There are several ways to win a fight. You shouldn't get discredited for using any of them.
Which would explain why Kos got his shot before Fitch. Not all wins are created equal. That is the simple nature of the beast.
Let's look at the Welterweight rankings
2. Jon Fitch - GSP dominated him
3. Thiago Alves - GSP dominated him
4. Josh Koscheck - GSP dominated him
5. BJ Penn - GSP dominated him or Jake Shields - GSP will dominate him in April
and now Anderson and the top 5 rankings against him
2. Chael Sonnen - lost the first 4 rounds to him
3. Yushin Okami - if you want to get really technical, Anderson has lost to Yushin
4. Nathan Marquardt - beat him, but had a few small problems with him
5. Demian Maia - beat him soundly, but was one of the worst fights in UFC history
So that's why GSP is P4P number 1 in the world.
you forgot the fact that guys like Jacare,Lawler and Nick Diaz who says he wants to be at 185 dont even fight in the ufc
GSP has every top 170 guy in his org so he has to fight the best, they even bring the best from other orgs over just to come face him
i think georges is very close to dethroning silva but not yet. I put silva ahead because the current records he holds in the ufc as far as most consecutive wins and title defenses and the manner in which he won most of those fights. Add in the moving up and scoring 2 kos at 205 and i think its still easy to hold silva at #1.
Those losses he had earlier in his career really are a moot point. Pac-man got ko'ed twice early on in his career and you dont see anyone bringing that up when p4p comes around.
GSP is clearly better than Silva. There is no one in the welterweight division that can challenge him; he is basically running through the contenders for a second time(asides from Shields who also has no chance).
He has maximised his skillset to a level far beyond any other current MMA fighter(maybe Aldo being the only exception). His wrestling is the best in the division, his ground game is near the top also, his striking is in the upper tier, his conditioning is unquestionnable. There is no one in the division that he can't dominate, leaving the viewer with little doubt that he could do the same thing 99 times out of 100. I also believe questions over his mental strength are overblown,as I wrote here:

Silva is very talented in striking and has good BJJ, but he can't wrestle to a high level in comparison to the other top fighters in MMA. Anyone who has average wrestling is subject to losses(as really should have happened had Sonnen managed an extra few minutes of control).
Silva does have more knockouts which seems to count in Dana's favour above any other kind of assessment.

In that case, at what point in time does the Serra fight cease to have any bearing on our assessment of GSP? It was long enough ago that there is a near concensus on it's improbability of happening again and it was avenged empthatically. As Silva no longer carries the stigma of being heelhooked by Chonan on a constant basis, we should apply the same common sense to GSP's loss to Serra. They are both on very long and dominant streaks- I don't think a simple numerical record is the best basis for proving Silva is the better fighter. In looking at the fights themselves, GSP appears to have developed into the more well rounded, harder to beat fighter.
when i see Anderson Silva fight,i see moments where the fight is in doubt.Where he is either taken down or looks confused or unsure of what to do.His fight against Chael was a win but a loss for any pound for pound argument
when i see GSP fight, there is never a moment of concern or doubt. If it goes to the ground,he controls every second,if its on the feet,he controls every second
Aldo is kinda the same way which is why i put Aldo ahead of Silva as well
plus guys like Lutter and Cote were the worst #1 contenders in the history of combat sports and goes to show how pathedic this 185 division that Anderson has dominated has been since hes been in the UFC
There's a case for either guy
