NAGA CHICAGO- Results On Saturday, May 22nd, 2004 the NAGA made its debut in the Mid-West with the 2004 NAGA CHICAGO GRAPPLING CHAMPIONSHIP. An incredible 582 grapplersand 97 Teams from across the country made the trip to Chicago to compete. Even though the NAGA has had over 1,300 competitors at it's events, NAGA Chicago was the largest event 1st time event tournament to be held in a new part of the country! MASSIVE DAY In one day we held100 Gi & No-Gi Grappling Divisions; Three Spectacular Superfights; Two 8-Man Pro Divisions and the Oxydol Challenge! The 9 rings of action stared at 12 Noon and finished around 10 PM that evening. With so many competitors, the NAGA has decided to make our next NAGA Chicago event in November a two day event with Adult No-Gi on Saturday and Kids/Teens and Adult Gi on Sunday.
SPECIAL THANKS The event was sponsored by Oxydol and we cannot thank them enough for their awesome contribution to this event and the sport! We also want to thanks Chris Dranka from Team Combat Do who spent most of his weekend traveling back and forth to the 2 airports picking up NAGA staff members. Many of our flights were delayed until 3 and 5 in the morning and Chris came through in getting everyone to the event. He also sponsored all the vehicles we used. Also a special thanks to Bob Schirmer and Combat Do who had numerous volunteers help run the event that day. Our NAGA staff that was flown in did a great job running the event, several of our referees were not able to make it to the event due to cancelled flights so the ones that did make it worked extra hard including: Dustin Ware, Joe & Laura Cuff, Eddie Fyvie Sr & Jr., Kirik Jenness, John Hagopian, Jeff Edwards, Dan Simmler, Meghan O'Brien, Mike C., Danny Ives. The Turton Family, Doug Roenncamp, Zee, Mat Santos & Jamie Tony.
PICTURES AND VIDEO Podium Winner pictures, Actions pictures and DVD of the Superfights will all be available on the www.nagafighter website this weekend.
Thank you to all who attended, we look forward to seeing you all again in November 2004!
SUPERFIGHT RESULTS: The event kicked off with an exciting Superfight between Danny Ives (Bolao) and Bob Schirmer (Combat-Do). Ives won the match submitting Schirmer with a rear naked choke. Look to see a rematch at the next NAGA Chicago event in November.
John Stutzman (Jorge Gurgel) defeated Jeff Curran (Curran's MA) in overtime in what was one of the most exciting, fast paced matches of the day!
Jens Pulver (Miletich Martial Arts) defeated Marcos "Parrumpinha" Damatta (American Top Team) is a close but extremely exciting match. Parrumpinha had a tight triangle choke on Jens for the first minute of the match however Jens was able to escape and eventually win the match by a single point.
EXPERT DIVISION RESULTS: UNDER 175 lbs. EXPERT DIVISION ($1,000 Purse): Fabio Holanda (Brazilian Top Team) & JZ Calvacante of (American Top Team) split the 1st place purse for the Under 175 lb. Expert Division.
OVER 175 LBS. EXPERT DIVISION ($1,000 Purse): Jeff Monson (American Top Team) won the over 175 lb. Expert Class.
$3,000.00 OXYDOL CHALLENGE By far, the most exciting grappling match of the day was the OXYDOL Challenge. OXYDOL, a major sponsor of the NAGA CHICAGO event, offered all amateur competitors an opportunity to win $3,000.00 that day if they could last 6 minutes against Wade Rome (ATT). Amateur grapplers participating in the NAGA Chicago event were able to enter their name into a drawing. The winner was Ryan Patterson, a Purple Belt from Team Curran who had just placed in the Men's Purple Belt Gi Division. Before congratulating Ryan on his tremendous victory, we wanted to give a huge shout out to Wade Rome. Wade really was in a no-win situation being the Pro in the Oxydol Challenge. All of the spectators in attendance cheered for his opponent. Even if Wade did submit Ryan, he had the advantage of being larger and more experienced. Wade put on a hell of a fight, never once letting up the pressure on his opponent. He also did not do anything that would be considered in bad taste and in the end, he went home the winner in our book.
Thank you to Wade and especially OXYDOL for sponsoring this great match! A huge congratulations to Ryan Patterson on his $3,000 victory!
