I need to beef up my jazz collection. Of the classic albums, I have
Love Supreme and Kind of Blue, and not much else. What are
some great jazz discs to own. I like all kinds of jazz, especially
(but definately NOT limited to) stuff with great bass playing. The
two previously mentioned discs are two of my favorite CDs,
period.
Dave Brubeck's "Time Out" is an absolute requirment. Vince Guaraldi's "Charlie Brown Christmas" is absolutley fantastic as well.
Charles Mingus - Mingus Dynasty
Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um
Thelonious Monk - Best of the Blue Note Years
Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers - Moanin'
Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage
Ornette Coleman - Shape of Jazz to Come
Wayne Shorter - Juju
Thelonious Monk - Brilliant Corners
Getz and Gilberto - the one with the Girl from Ipanema
Thanks guys. Keep them coming. I'm not new to jazz, but my
collection is pretty thin.
Get "Clifford Brown with Max Roach". Yes, the one with that title.
And I could literally name a thousand, too, but I won't.
Okay one more. Mingus' "The Clown" if only for the first tune, since that's one of the great bass performances ever. The man knew how that thing should sound.
For vocals, you must have a couple Ella Fitzgerald discs.
