I still truly believe that the UFC used Khamzat as an excuse to move those fights around. Nate said he never wanted to fight Khamzat anyway. The way Nate and Tony looked in their fight, they both would have been murdered that night.

After the fight, Nate said he didn’t throw a single punch during training for that fight. He said he only did all wrestling and grappling, which is evident by the fact that as soon as Tony attempted one take down, he got choked out right away

I think folks underestimate how slick Diaz was in catching that shot just right, and one armed. I thought at the time that he had been training the hell out of doing just that. It would have been his 1 in a million chance against Khamzat however.
