Need a gi for a HUGE new student...please help!

Hey everyone,

Just had a new student sign up to train.  He's 5'11", 375 pounds!  I rolled with him tonight for the first time, came at me like a banshee, gassed out in 30 seconds, almost had a heart attack.

Anyways, I gave him an A5 Ouano, the top fit him, but wouldn't fold across his belly.  The pants were a no go, he's got HUGE thighs.

So, I've done a google search, but haven't found much.  Any gi's you might recommend for this guy?  I appreciate any and all suggestions.

Thanks a lot!

Eric Burdo

There was a blue belt at the US Open a few years back about that size. If I recall correctly, he was wearing either a Mizuno or Fuji Judo gi.

here is a link for custom sizing Mizuno's

I have a friend who is almost 400 lbs and I got him an A7? I'll have to check what company it was from. He's 6'7, it's what covers his belly. I'd suggest something like that and getting the legs and sleeves hemmed shorter

On a related note, I'm so happy he hasn't learned to use his weight yet and I can still crawl all over his back and keep him on his back lol but he's learning to move and will be scary when he does learn Phone Post 3.0

Similar build guy at my academy has probably 20 Shoyorolls. Not sure of the size, but they all fit him really well.

Thanks for the help, folks!

A more important question is.......What the heck were you doing rolling with a beginner that big??!!

I think Ouano might make some gis like that?

I might have a white A6 Phone Post 3.0

My big boy is 6'5' close to 400 he wears a Fuji A7

Mizuno makes some pretty big judo gis also

OP once i start my bjj gi company i'll see what i can do, i'm still kickin the around the idea of making gi's out of burlap sacks.....for real!

cheap, highly breathable and extremebly durable!

Fuji is the best big guy gi. I'd say Fuji A7 for him. I'm 6-3 315 with a 44" waist and I use A5. Phone Post 3.0

Thanks for the help, everyone.  I contacted Fuji, and they recommended their Judo double weave pants, size A9, so that's what we ordered.  Once we get the pants, I'll give an update on the fit, just in case anyone is interested.

Thanks again!

Nope. But I understand their point. I don't agree with it. And it's very disheartening. But I understand it. Phone Post 3.0
