Well today it finally happend. I am the smallest guy in our gym and I got tapped by a white belt when no-gi rolling due to the guy just being stronger. I am the second best guy in the gym and haven't been tapped by anyone lower than me. I really have to rely on pure technique to beat them though since most are stronger than me. So besides keep practicing to improve my skill I would like to start some sort of strength workout. Its my upper body that is alot weaker than most. I work full time and its a struggle to get to the gym as is but I could get up early to start working out more. Does anyone know of a good work out for building strength relative to jiu jitsu? Thanks
Deadlift
Squat
Power clean
Bench press
Overhead press
Barbell Row
Pull up/chin up
I highly recommend either Stronglifts or Starting Strength as a good place to start.

What is your current rank? What did you tap to? A pin, sub, gassing?
We don't have many students. Our instructer is a black belt, and the highest guy is a good purple. I am a blue. I got caught in a kimura by a much larger guy, in his defense, hes a pretty good white belt and should be getting his blue soon. I know the escapes I just didn't do them quick enough. I thought if I was stronger it would either provide me more time to work technique or get out of the submission altogether. I usualy do much betther with a gi on because I can grab some clothing, I started to do that then realized it was illegal and he yanked the arm out. Hindsight being 20/20 I should have just cupped my leg or rolled over the shoulder of the trapped arm. I have no excuses, I got beat and would like to improve not only in technique but strength and conditioning as well.
I just started looking over starting strength and think I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the advice.

this is a dangerous mindset. i've heard lots of people say in frustration that they know the escape but didn't get it off
prevention is better than cure - don't be there in the first place
I second this.
No harm in getting stronger.
Google EDT by Charles Staley.
If you're good with torrents, search for Power to the People, Starting Strength, Naked Warrior or Convict Conditioning. Or download Dan John's free (and great) ebook From the Ground Up from his web site.
dontbehatin - if you're gettign tapped by white belts, you're game isn't where it should be. forget about getting strong. work on you TECHNIQUE some more bro.
Tech is hard to work when you are getting folded in half by some jacked up dude who has tech as well
Getting stronger will improve every aspect of your life.
Hit the weights, and focus on big-boy lifts:
Bench
Deadlift
Squat
Over-head Press
Bent-Row
Dips
Pull-ups
You WILL get stronger.
There are weight classes for a reason. If you don't want to gain weight, then you're better off beating him on technique. It will feel effortless after a while becaue you will have technically derived strength.

If you're too lazy to do all of this.
At least do rows and dumbbell presses
Download Power to the People for ideas on training for strength without mass.
