Evolution of BJJ Book & DVD with Oswaldo Alves & Fredson Paixao

Both of those guys have great games and i've heard Oswaldo described as the encyclopedia of jiujitsu. i'm a bit disappointed its in Portugese/Japanese thou. I've always wanted to see Oswaldo teach, so i'm really looking forward to this.

That is awesome news. Fredson is an amazing teacher. I hope it comes through on the DVDs. I think that Osvaldo ALves is one of the least known yet most important figures in BJJ.

Cool, I hope they'll get English translation worked soon.

Oswaldo produced some of the greats from Fredson, Bittetti, Jacare & Galvao. I honestly think his secret is the drills. He does a ton of them and I think there is a youtube video floating around with Fredson demonstrating. I wish he devoted a book to those drills.

My teacher Sergio Penha is a student of Oswaldos. I'm definitely buying this book/dvd but its ashame its not in English.

Anybody trained at Alves' place in Rio?

I picked up the book/DVD last weekend.

I haven't had a chance to watch the DVD properly yet, but had a quick glance through the book, which is in two halves: First Alves then Paixao.

Alves seems to pretty much go through positional control and transitions.

Whereas Paixao goes through passing the guard/DLR guard and of course wrist attacks.

Something I was glad to see though, was the drills that they do (there was a youtube vid of them floating around a while back) are included on the DVD - albeit briefly.

Will give some more detail when I have had more time to check it out.

With the passing of Helio, Osvaldo may be the eldest with the most knowledge. There are a few interviews floating around on the net with him.

I posted on that drilling video the other day.

Sorry guys, can't embed anymore. Need to upgrade account I guess.

Opash,

Is the video in Portuguese with Japanese subtitles or is there a voiceover?

Yup, they explain in Portugese and the subtitles are Japanese.

That is pretty common in Japanese instructional materials, but it annoys the hell out of me.
Of course if it's spoken in Enlgish then it's no problem for me.

But in cases like this one (I don't speak Portugese) its a real pain, to keep pausing and rewinding back to see what he said. In the end I just try and get the gist of it by watching and checking the subs if there is a small detail I wanna know.
