this whole thing is going to set the sport back...watching ivan salavary run away and counter was sickening to watch......yes i know strategy blah blah blah..but to literally RUN away from your opponnent is a bit too much.....first there was lay and pray....then ground and pound and then stall and brawl....now we have run and gun for the fighter/track star who can't really avoid take downs and can't really stand and bang.....in the last 2 or 3 events this style has been very popular.....i know a win is a win, but i don't tune in to see wins i tuune in to see FIGHTS!!!!!...if i want to see people running away i'll watch the running of the bulls.....
imagine if salavary's opponent wasn't willing to push the action??? well you would have another salavary v. marquardt or sylvia v. orlivski III...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.......countering and manuvering have their place but if that is all you are going to do i really don't want to watch........
There should be two circles in the center of the ring and they have to
stand there like rock'em sock'em robots.
The only fights that really bugged me were Hominick and the Crow's
last fights. Turning your back completely and doing a lap is running.
back peddling and nailing counters takes some skill.
Once again, if there was no strategy in MMA from certain fighters,
every fight would like like TUF or a happy slapfest.
you see this is what i love about the UG you try to start a discussion and then some window licker has to but in tyring to sound cool....it didn't work....
i'm just saying that run & gun is not entertaining...in a sport, as in all sport, that sells entertainment......
zuffa doesn't sell wins and losses they sell entertainment, in which people will win and lose.....
in other words....zuffa doesn'tmake money and attract new viewers and sponsors by people winning, its HOW they win/lose that brings in the cash....and run & gun works against that.........
bingo. simple concept that some people have trouble with.
bingo bingo...but if two fighter with this samer style fight....zzzzzzzzzzzz.....and i see this style becoming more prevalent.......get what i'm saying.....
Got-damn, everything anybody does is subject to critiquing. They don't stand and punch each other in Boxing either. When are MMA fans going to be satisfied?
Salaverry's performance was in no way comparable to Loiseau's, Lyoto's, Hominick's, or Alessio's. Those guys had no interest in engaging and just wanted to try and outscore their opponents with an occasional jab (except for Loiseau who was just trying to survive). None of them made any attempt to finish.
Salaverry outlanded his opponent by 10-1 and finished him in the second round. He rarely threw just one strike at a time. Just because he isn't getting tanled up in a sloppy slugfest doesn't mean he's not engaging.
There's a difference between fighting for a decision and picking your opponent apart on the way to finishing him. I don't care which direction a guy is moving as long as he's doing damage. It doesn't have to be Frye/Takayama to be a good fight.
"...the finish was sweet, but would you have enjoyed
it if it had gone to a decision with salaverry
fighting like that for the entire fight?"
So many if's, and's, and but's. This isn't the "What
If" subforum (though this thread should probably go
there). I'll tell you what: IF this fight went to
decision, and IF Salaverry continued fighting the
exact same way he did before the finish, and IF
Santore was able to continue fighting the same way
he did before he got finished, then this fight
would be remembered as one of the bloodiest battles
and grittiest exhibitions of heart on Santore's part
in the history of the sport.
Oh. Have you two (mteub, Johnny Blaze) actually
watched the fight yet?
i guess this particular fight might not be the perfect example....but the style was used.....had sntore not kept charging ahead it would have been brutal............his fight with marquardt is a bette example......my worry is your "style makes fights" creedo you guys love to spout will be moot if this style ges anymore popular amongst fighters......you dig?........
"...my worry is your "style makes fights" creedo you

The sport is safe. There are as many styles are there
are personalities and body types. Some fighters are
phsyically and/or psychologically incapable of
fighting certain ways. This was true in the past, is
true now, and will be true until the end of time.
And promoters know that styles make fights. This
is why you were watching Lindland and Salaverry fight
for the WFA last weekend and not the UFC. Of course,
if someone is good enough at what they do, no matter
how mind-numbing their style, people will eventually
demand they get their shot at the big time (Winky
Wright and Chris Byrd in boxing, and probably Lindland
now in MMA).
