Lately (last couple of years) I've been really enjoying the NFL. I've always known about it but being in the UK never really exposed to it other then awesome movies about High School and Texas. It always looked super cool and as I got older I could appreciate the beastly athleticism that it takes to play at the top level but that was about it.
I'm pretty hooked now and I think there's a lot to like about the sport. It was pretty disappointing to read that 50% of parents won't let their kids play and I wonder what the future will bring? I mean, it's YOUR sport. How can Americans feel that way? Surely it's always been known as a tough sport? What would 1960's pops say about this latest survey?
I wonder what would American Football would look like without the pads? Would that help?
P.S If Soccer ends up being the dominant sport in the US then you took a wrong turn somewhere.
The NFL will be fine and will not lose the top spot. It doesn't matter if 50% say they wouldn't let their kid play, because 99% of that 50% not playing wouldn't make it to the NFL anyway.
the kids that will be banned from playing football are kids who will have never made the NFL
the super athletic kids will still play don't worry
Sofa King Cool -Exactly my thoughts. No one cares if 5 foot 4 little jimmy who weights 100lbs isn't allowed to play football lolJhay -I am talking out of my ass and totally speculating, but I would imagine that the fifty percent number comes from people in the northern states. I'm in Texas, and I don't know anyone who wouldn't let their kids play football. I would certainly think that the same thing applies in Oklahoma, Louisiana, Alabama, etc. And I would think that most of the top players originate from those states. I don't know that for a fact, I'm just making stuff up.

Again,

No Fun League
RicoCutler - That poll was bullshit. Just about any dad would want his son to play in the NFL.Junior Seau, the linebacker from the Chiefs Even after the OSU player shot himself at 22 in the head in a dumpster after his 6th concussion? I'm hearing this shit in New Zealand dude...
Something's gotta give...

Football has never been a top youth participation sport in the US. I think at best it was third. This has no effect on it's popularity because it is widely enjoyed by ppl that have never even played it. It's popularity show no sign of waning.
lol @ soccer overtaking football in the US. that has absolutely zero chance of happening
so let me guess this is probably getting more press in England than the Wembley NFL games?
do you guys remember Theisman's leg breaking? I dont either but it freaked my dad out. He still let me play football

Again,
No you're right:
To the list of issues that divide the country along partisan lines, you can add an unusual item: football.
Yes, virtually every slice of America still watches football in enormous numbers. But blue America -- particularly the highly educated Democratic-leaning areas of major metropolitan areas -- is increasingly deciding that it doesn't want its sons playing football.

yup
people are always surprised that soccer is the #1 sport in the US when it comes to youth participation
it has been that way for years, but still no change in adult popularity
