I was thinking about getting the Rebel XSI, but now have been reading a lot of nice previews about the Nikon D90.
What are your thoughts and opinions? Is it worth the extra money?
(This will be my first DSLR)
Thanks!
What are you using it for?
The D90 supports both AF-S lens and AF-D lens, so you will be able to buy affordable F1.4 and F1.8 lenses if needed. If you're shooting for fun, which it sounds like you will be doing, it's certainly a great starter camera. Buy a bag for it and get some lens cover (even Walmart has them these days) to protect everything.
A great $200+ lens for any Nikon is the 55-200mm AF-S VR (make sure you're getting the VR) F4-5.6...it's not a fast lens, but it's great for eliminating any shake on your end while zooming out far enough for most of the applications you would be using it for (family, gatherings, slower sports, outdoor photography, etc).
Check out this page if you want an honest review from someone who knows his stuff.
Thank you very much! I appreciate it.
Its been a funny last month- Looking at just an entry DSLR, and then got carried away as I saw the 40d, and then was thinking about waiting and upgrading to the 50D.
Finally, came to my (financial) senses and got the Rebel XSI instead.
It's also best to stick with what you need the camera for..like I, for example, would not need a Nikon D3 for good MMA photos right now. I'd love to have a D300, but a D50 works just fine. A D300 will come in the future once, or if, I make a name for myself.

Yes, you have to start somewhere. I still use a Canon Rebel XT, an outdated yet still badass camera. I simply can't afford a newer one right now but I do have my sights on either the new 50D or 5D Mark 2.
