Other matches of intrigue were born out of Monday's news as well, yet
one man who will remain absent from the UFC, at least as a result of this
deal, is Lindland.
The middleweight star informed Sherdog.com via e-mail Monday evening
that he was not bound to the WFA in any capacity, and was therefore not
among the group of fighters acquired by the UFC.
well, if t hey DID get Machida and Rampage, there area at least 2 fights right there. Rampage v Chuck 2, and Machida v Franklin 2. Herring will add to the HW division. The UFC had LIndland. If they wanted him, they wouldn't have let him go for that bullshit reason they did. IMO, they should re-sign him and let Anderson Silva destroy him.
To appreciate lindland's fights one must have an understanding of the full gambit of mma, including great clinch work, dirty boxing from the clinch and great rolling.
Love watching lindland fight. The guy always is working and pushing the action. He tends to nullify other fighters games, hence some people consider it boring. To each there own.
Wasn't Mayhem in WFA at one point? I'd like to see Mayhem fight in UFC again.
I'm no promotor, but Icon really hit the 2pt conversion when they signed him. Mayhem is a brand in himself. With the Trigg loss and the taklent at Icon, I think they are just a step behind UFC. Maturally they don't have as many shows, but definietly have USA fanbase. Trigg, Mayhem, Lawler, Vitale. Nice Round robin there.
Glad UFC bought those guys contracts. Its unfortunate that WFA didnt work out, but great that their talent has found a home.
This news must make Anderson a very very happy man. Lindland would easily defeat Anderson. Great wrestler versus a guy who's biggest whole in his game is his TD defense.
So I guess the initial reports were just completely wrong, that claimed Lindland had been talking to the UFC and the obligation to the WFA was holding him back? I should have known it couldn't be right coming from the Wrestling Observer.
From WrestlingObserver.com:
"--UFC today purchased the assets of the remnants of the WFA promotion from owners Ross Goodman and Louis Palazzo. The group ran a PPV show in June that failed, and canceled the second event scheduled for this past Saturday night. In the deal, Zuffa picked up its choice of fighter contracts. While not yet official as to which contracts are and aren't being picked up, the two key contracts were Quinton Jackson and Matt Lindland, both of which UFC has interest in. UFC has been trying to sign Lindland for a few months, and the hold-up had been Lindland's inability to get out of his WFA contract."
