"no man's land"

Could you give me some general principals when you
find your self in "no man's land" for top and bottom
player. I'm talking about that instant when no one
has control over the other person during a guard pass.
Especially for someone Large and over 40.
Thanks

From the bottom:

Be the first to get to a position of control or advantage! While a person
can maintain the advantage from the bottom position, it is best to seek
out a position of control from the bottom.

From the top:

It is best to establish your base and then apply your weight before moving
to another position.
