Its funny how dana always says "our guys fight 3 times a year" Phone Post

Interesting stat but let me play devils advocate here.

It's not 100% the UFC's fault as:
fighters get injured
fighters lose the belt as soon as they defend it.

That last point is the biggest variable.  Things don't look as bad when you see how many fights a fighter had using when they became the champion as the end point of the year.

What would be the most fair stat, is this:

How many times a year was the title on the line for fw, lw, ww, mw, lhw, hw?
That stat would show how many times UFC put on championship title fights for each weight division in a fiscal year.
That way, if Frankie Edgar fights 3 fights, his 3rd fight being for the title, that way it will show that the champion fought 3 times a fiscal year prior to becoming the champion. Lets say Frankie fights and wins march, july, and in Nov, and Nov he wins the title. Now if Edgar fights in Feb and loses, if Frankie fights 3 more times after the Feb fight(within the fiscal year), Frankie fought a fair amount of fights per year, but just not as champion.

If whoever beat Frankie in Feb, you would look at that fighter's fights prior to the championship in Feb.

Haven't read the whole thread, but bj fought GSP(Feb), Florian(Aug), and Diego(Dec) in 2009.

Yearly average in the past 5 years is 1.92.
2.22 if you include the new fw & bw divisions since their inception.

The last three threads I've open have had so much fail. Phone Post

Bj Penn fought 3 times in 2009 while the ufc lw champ. In jan he went up to ww to challenge GSP and fought kenny in august and Sanchez in December Phone Post

As posts have proven, this thread is BS

At any rate, not every champ can defend as many times as Joe Louis. It will wear a fighter the fuck out. Twice a year at the elite level is hard enough.

Edit just noticed "The Canadian Rose" stated same thing as I did.

SlatstheFist - ..and Ufc er Dana always complained how Fedor only fought 2 times a year. Phone Post

Cindy just complained about this for Rampage as well

LOL! No, I didn't! I said Rampage could have fought more but chose not to because he wanted to make a movie, and being on a 2 fight losing streak means he didn't get 2 win bonuses yet he complains about earning LESS than he did when he came back (and won a few in a row).

I don't care if he fights or not, nor do I care in he wins or loses... but LOL@ trying to gain sympathy for NOT getting money he did NOT earn=) Like they owe him something. Pfft.

Archangel - Yeah it's really sad. The chsmpins should. Be defend every 3-4 months

I agree 1,000% unless they are injured, which has been the case for some of them ther past 12-18 months. Even with what- eight weight divisions now- the can all still compete 3 times a year, barring unjuries, and I think they absolutely should.

Twice a year is far from enough. It jams up divisions and slows down the sports development.

And as shown, in average, champs actually fight LESS than twice a year.

Champs should fight 3-4 times a year.
Other fighters 3-6.

This way contenders will get their chances, divisions will constantly develop, chances will be given, the sport will evolve much quicker, more fans will come and stay.

Pathetic. In the WWE every champion is REQUIRED to defend at least once every 30 days. Phone Post
