Earlier this month, Israeli Muay Thai champion Ilya Grad posted a blistering message on InstaGram, and followed up in an interview with Luke Thomas. In sum, he was not impressed with UFC lightweight Sage Northcutt's controversial coach/father. The gist of the charge was that Northcutt's father is an utterly incompetent coach, and that Sage needs to get to a real camp.

Sage appeared recently on Ariel Helwani's The MMA Hour, and offered a defense of his father, calling the remarks untrue and totally weird.

"That was my first time training with him, and he's supposed to be a Muay Thai world champion," said Northcutt, as transcribed by Shaun Al-Shatti for MMA Fighting. "I'm not sure where he got his world title from. As you could see from the fight, I actually showed up there -- my jiu-jitsu coach, my grappling coach set it all up. So I was supposed to go there and spar hard, and he starts making excuses saying his neck hurts, he's this, he's that and he can't spar, so we said okay.

"So I'm out there just toying around, as you could see in the video, barely touching him, just moving around, playing, pretty having fun, as you could see. And the comments he said, the things he said out there, those weren't true. None of those were true, and you could see that from the video."

"For him to say that he was there to teach me, he wasn't there to teach me anything. From that video, you could see that he couldn't teach me anything. Like, he was just there to be a sparring partner.

"That was definitely not right of him to do that. I don't know what he's talking about. None of that, none of the facts or anything that he was trying to claim were true. So, I believe that he was just trying to get some limelight from us and get some attention and get his name out there."

"(That's) the first time that's happened. And like I said earlier, there's people who are always, they're trying to get attention. They might be saying negative stuff, but you know, I know what's true. The people around me know what's true."

Sage Northcutt fights Enrique Marin on July 9 at UFC 200. He does not appear to be preparing at a major camp.

got a feeling this guys fake as the tits on katie price Phone Post 3.0

Couldn't hear the dad...

But my phone has shitty speakers Phone Post 3.0

The video validates Sage's story.

Not to say his dad isn't a dick, but that can't be concluded from this video.

Meanwhile this other guy is definitely seeking some limelight. Phone Post 3.0

MT guy was just moving Sage about imo. Phone Post 3.0

The fact that Sage is sparring with a guy like this illustrates how badly he needs to find a team and stick with them.

I don't have any problem with what Grad stated. He was contacted to work/spar with Northcutt because, he was told, they didn't have any sparring partners. It was his goal to work on defense, move around, and lightly spar. However, he contends, rather than allow for this to happen, Northcutt's father was yelling out instructions and acting like an unprofessional asshole...imagine that.

Grad simply noticed that this setup/camp was not very polished, it lacked sparring partners, and had a show dad basically bullying the son around and calling the shots. It was his belief that Northcutt would excel in a more professional environment or a real camp.

Sounds reasonable.

Except that is not the case according to video and Northcut and he spends 4 or 5 weeks at the time at spots like Tristar and the Blackzilians.

Places like the Blackzilians and training parterns like Michael Chandler provide a more professional experience than what superfamous superpro israeli dude is able to bring to the table IMO.

Israeli kickboxer got out of his comfort zone. He should have stuck to fighting palestinian rock throwing kids. Phone Post 3.0

Right, but that is not the experience that Grad saw or experienced. He was brought in under the statement, "we have no sparring partners" then witnessed a "camp" which was dominated by a show father yelling shit as his son in a very light sparring match.

Many fighters train elsewhere, while also having a professional camp at home. Sage has a alpha show dad as his "coach" most of the time.

Grad can only talk from the perspective and situation he was in, and from that position, he concluded Sage needed a real camp, not a pageant dad.

This video seems to contradict Grad's story...that's all I know. Phone Post 3.0

Mt guy was terrible. That guy being a Mt champ is embarrassing, he got destroyed by a side step lol.

Watch the people in the background. Also hilarious, big guy on the bag Phone Post 3.0

They were both going harder than they should've been but the kick boxer really didn't like sages hand speed and it showed Phone Post 3.0

it was unprofessional to run to the UG and complain about a person that paid you to train him. If the MT coach had a problem, he should have addressed it with sage, not air it out on a public forum, it is not productive.

Sagester seems to cause lots of envy everywhere he goes. I wonder if he's almost too nice of a guy for MMA, kind of like Marcelo Garcia.

How legit is the kick boxer? Sage looked good. Don't really know what the kick boxer is complaining about either Phone Post 3.0

Sounds like the MT guy was pissed he was getting beat up
