Notes on big fights

To expand my knowledge, I'm watching a fight a week featuring one of the fighters listed in the Boxing Register. I'll watch many of the fighters listed more than once, but I want to select key match-ups and make my notations. I thought some of you might be interested in seeing my notes and making your own observations on the fights. Today's fight is Lou Ambers vs. Henry Armstrong II. This is a return fight in which the great Armstrong knocked Ambers down in the first, and Ambers got up and cut Armstrong above the left eye and mouth. Armstrong reportedly swallowed massive amounts of blood enroute to a split decision, taking Amber's title. One year later the re-match.

Rd 1: Fight is being fought in close quarters. Armstrong is obviously the bigger stronger man and is wading in to fight head first. Armstrong is using a left hook - overhand right combination with good effect. Ambers is scoring with uppercuts before getting smothered inside, but is eating rights from Armstrong on Henry's way in.

Rd 2: Armstrong is using his head and using good up down movement inside especially after the left hook. When inside, it is noticeable how square Armstrong standing inside to land the uppercut.

Rd3: Armstrong's speed advantage outside is apparent and he appears to be using a strategy of landing a few hard, fast shots on his way in, apparently trying to grind Ambers down. But Ambers is game inside and fights back. Although you can see he is dropping his hands and appears to be getting roughed up in the clinch by Amrstrong's head and shoulders.

he would get called for that, but guys don't get called for intentionally clinching a million times a round
