Former Strikeforce Lightheavyweight champion Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal recently tested positive for the Performance Enhancing Drug Drostanolone in a post fight urinalysis administered by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. At a hearing on Monday Lawal was sharply questioned by NSAC Commissioner Pat Lundvall, who at one point asked "Can you read English?"

The NSAC ultimately declared Lawal's win over Larkin a No Contest, fined him $39,000 (30% percent of his $80,000 show purse, and 100% of his $15,000 win bonus, suspended for nine months, and he is subject to further testing in order to be relicensed.

Lawal took offense at the questioning by Lundvall, and a short time later called her a "racist b---" on twitter. He was shortly thereafter released by Strikeforce parent company ZUFFA.

Debate followed in the MMA community about whether Lundvall's questioning was racist or at the very least insensitive, or whether it was standard procedure by a woman who has been described as one of Nevada's top trial lawyers

The issue in no small part hinges on whether or not Lundvall has used identical language with a caucasion fighter in the past.

It turns out she has, as revealed in a piece by Kevin Iole.

On March 23,  2011, boxer Michael Shane Steele tested positive for an anabolic steroid. Steele, who is white, appeared before the commission on May 20, 2011, and underwent rigorous questioning from Lundvall. According to a commission transcript, the following exchange took place between Lundvall and Steele:

Pat Lundvall: Do you have any other information that you are willing to share with the Commission to explain why you tested positive for banned substances?

Michael Steele: None. Only the supplements I took and what I was trying to accomplish in taking them.

PL: Do you read English?

MS: Yes, ma'am.

PL: Do you understand the written word?

MS: Yes, I believe so.

While the questioning was undoubtedly unpleasant, it is now abundantly apparant that it was not racist.

Well that's that. Phone Post

doesnt matter how much proof is posted, tards will be tards

If i had a mom, she would look like Pat Lundvall Phone Post

cunty and racist are 2 different things.

pretty pissed at her being racist against good white folk like this

lol except Shane Steele is the kind of white guy that even white folk are racist against. I think she legitimately wasn't sure if he was literate.

holy crap this bitch is racist against black people AND white people.

Is it me or does she look like aerosmiths Steven Tyler. One ugly tranny looking bitch. Phone Post

It's actually a smart way to phrase the question. She asks "did you fully understand the form?" then of course the guy will say no. She asks "can you read English?" the guy's insulted and will say yes. She gets the answer she wants, bitchy or not. Phone Post

^^^^^Call someone scum in a thread about potential racism. be blatantly homophobic. GTFO dude.

This. It's a smart and condos ending manner to get someone to bite

Plus Mo KNEW what he signed. End of story. Just do your timeout, talk good about Dana and the UFC and you will get your shot back in a year. Don't shoot yourself in the foot by bad mouthing Dana Phone Post

Everyone who originally cried racism is officially retarded and should be put to shame for being the lowest form of humanly life possible: a race-baiter.

Blue name please

Lawyers are cunts. duh

How is it "cunty" to ask a question that can prove wrongdoing based on the answer provides? That's called good legal procedure. To think otherwise would be idiotic. Phone Post

It's pretty obvious she is just proving a point, if you can read then why did you miss this shit in the ingredients etc.

No she wasn't. Did you even listen to the audio of it? She was talking about the forms he filled out. She gets even nastier right after that, demanding to know if he has email, or a computer, and knows how to do google searches. She didn't do anything "wrong" but she was unprofessional, nasty, and as a government agency official whose salary is paid by the public should avoid being so damn rude to a guy who is being perfectly polite.

Smart, sure, if you're an attorney with an obligation to an agenda for a client, no matter how. But she's not. As a public official in this case her role is to find the truth, not play mind games to get the guy to give her a specific answer.

Mo used PEDs, lied, fell into trap at hearing, got pissed, attempted to deflect all to commissioner with racism comment, got caught again and fired. What's next Mo? Try going completely radical and being honest.

Yes, she used the same line of questioning before. However, she did it in a different sequence with Mo.

He had already been in front of the commission for SEVERAL MINUTES talking about the case, and her first question was: "Do you understand English?"

If you had been speaking English with someone for some time and they then asked if you understood a language you had clearly been speaking, it would sound incredibly condescending to you.

In the other case mentioned by the OP, she first asks him if Steele if he reads English, then if he "understands the written word," not English. That is a subtle but very different dynamic IMO.

I understand she was trying to make a point about what he had willingly signed, but she could have done the same thing just as effectively by asking, "Did you read and understand the form before signing it?"
