NSAC to probe Rohskopf's corner not stopping

Lazer MMA -

Study here in MMA IQ and IQ in general which is again holding poorly (mostly) in this thread for posters.... Forget the corner for a second.. He took the fight on five days notice and had tweeted he was injured and not training.

It was clear as F that Rohskopf was lucky to made it out of round two.He was moving VERY poorly and VERY tired. In fact toward the end of the first he started to look that way.... IF YOU did not know the fight was over after round two, you don't need to post ever, you need to learn the first things about the sport/fighting in general......

That established, It's his corner that SHOULD have asked HIM if he wanted to continue and if he said yes then they should have told him he had a short leash. The corner is there to protect the fighters too!! If they fail to do so they should be removed from corner work.

To the great warriors here calling pussy get a brain, oh that's right per above you had ZERO in the 1st place! THE FIGHT WAS OVER......

Tangent - if he's not training and not in shape to fight and not experienced enough, why is he accepting this fight in the first place?

I disagree with a lot of what you said. Overcoming the mental "I can't" hurdle is a huge step for a young fighter to make. If Drysdale had convinced him to go back out there and just survive to the end of the fight, he'd have come out of it mentally harder and would likely be in a great situation mentally going into his next fight. A good corner can keep his fighter safe while not letting the fighter quit on himself. If he was taking a beating without having success like Thomas Gifford did, I'd feel different. He was tired. He was also having success. Great teachable moment you hope to have with your guy BEFORE he gets to the big show. This guy had an opportunity to learn it IN the big show.

hes not ready for ufc

Just my 2 cents there should be no shame in quitting on the stool if you truly know your done and he should not be punished for this.

Hopefully the kid gets another shot with the UFC when heā€™s ready.

Drysdale did what he was supposed to do. He was mentally done but not physically damaged where trying to get him to continue could be dangerous.

I've seen coaches pushing exhausted guys harder in jr high school wrestling. There's nothing to see here.

Tap the mat at the beginning of the round. Simple. Done. End of story.

Take a knee and tap. He was in full control, not his corner.

After the suicide of team quest coach Robert Follis, Drysdale wrote a long Facebook post about how students just donā€™t appreciate their coaches enough and all the work that he does for them. His students then replied to this post by showering him with praise. It was weird. I get the sense he is very about himself.

I'm on drysdales side here. A coaches job is to encourage and push their fighters, especially if they aren't taking lots of damage or if they aren't injured. He knows his fighters better than anyone else. The kid just didn't want to be in there and I doubt we'll see him in the UFC again.

My thoughts too. Itā€™s not like itā€™s required a coach approve a fighter quitting, so the fighter can always do what he did and tell the ref or comission heā€™s done. You have a min between rounds, I see no problem in using that to convince your fighter to persevere through fatigue. If he was getting physically decimated and injured, thatā€™s different. This was fatigue and lack of confidence/will. Iā€™d hope my coach would try and get my mind right in that situation

Usually you need to protect your fighter if he is too tough for his own good, this is a different scenario. If a fighter wants to quit, he simply can, there is no one forcing him to continue. No need for an investigation here, I feel like Bennett is just pandering here.

This.  Itā€™s ridiculous how delicately some of you think professional MMA fighters need to be treated.  Combat athletes have to be pushed by their corner to reach levels they donā€™t realize they can reach.  ā€œThen hit him with your groin, Georges!ā€  Max wasnā€™t done, heā€™d just adrenaline dumped.  He needed to will himself to get through it and he couldnt do it.  He gave up on himself.

Iā€™m with Drysdale on this one. Itā€™s a coaches job to push their fighter when theyā€™re breaking mentally. Max had lived with Drysdale for the last 2 years so Iā€™m sure he knows the ins and outs of his fighters abilities and mental fortitude. He gave him every chance to change his mind and take up the full minute to recover physically and mentally. He hadnā€™t taken a massive amount of damage like Smith. And in the end Drysdale told the ref to stop it. Iā€™m interested to hear from Max too. Itā€™s possible regrets not continuing. Itā€™s also possible that he thinks calling it off was the right thing too. I guess weā€™ll see.

Rob Collins - If fight fans would read up a little on Max's story then they would know that he has come from a dysfunctional family and struggles with depression etc.

Robert Drysdale might know what makes Max tick and that Max may have just needed a push a little better than everyone else.

It all worked out though and the correct fighter won. Drysdale should not get fined or get in trouble though. Time to move on and look forward to Austinā€™s next fight!!

Max did quit and quit on himself but letā€™s be real, he took the fight short notice and should probably take some time off to re evaluate what he wants to do. Not that big of a deal especially since he took a short notice fight against a super tough guy

Robert Drysdale did his job perfectly as the coach and most likely knew that Max is a guy who had not seen much deep water being (5-0), was a self doubter and needed a push. He did his job as a coach.

While Mark Smith is probably the worst referee in the UFC overall, he did a good job tonight, in this fight and stopped it appropriately when the inspector told him too since you cannot throw in the towel. Max defeated himself with his own self doubt on the stool.

Get Max to a sports shrink ASAP and give him some time to heal up emotionally, learn to love himself and decide if he wants to move forward in MMA because from reading that article he came from a very broken home.

Guy is crazy talented but his worst enemy is obviously himself because Max did not really look that hurt from damage. To me, it looked like Max quit on himself but I do not fault him for this. I would never take a short notice fight against a super tough Austin Hubbard and 99.9% of MMA fans would not either.

He is super young and very talented and was only 5-0 in MMA.

Not sure Max will be back but honestly he made a fan out of me tonight for taking the fight short notice, in a matchup against a super tough way more experienced UFC vet.

For the record though, I was pulling for Austin and thought he was going to win due to his experience

From using Google, it looks like the corner can tell the inspector they want the fight stopped, who then alerts the referee to stop the fight which is what happened tonight. The towel cannot be thrown in the state of Nevada

Interesting stuff.

I feel like the same people questioning Drysdale about his cornering and treatment of his own fighter are the same people to question other peoples parenting of THEIR OWN KIDS!!

Probably best for fans to stay in their lane(s) unless individuals have been in the cage or ring before and have the same relationship with Max as Robert Drysdale has had for the last few years. Its far easier to be a monday morning quarterback after the event has concluded

I think his explanation is pretty reasonable and donā€™t see an issue with what he did.

I think itā€™s a huge deal. In boxing circles, fighters who quit, for whatever reason, are more likely to quit again in the future. That big wall of belief and faith in yourself thatā€™s inside you, once itā€™s broken, its never quite the same again. I believe Drysdale was fighting for Max beyond this one fight. Maybe beyond his fighting career. Maybe for his character for the rest of his life.

they did stop it... they just gave him every single chance to push forward.

They stopped it only because the commission overheard him saying he didnā€™t want to fight and told Herb Dean. Herb then went over and asked him if he wanted to continue and he said no. The corner did nothing.

guy never got off the stool. I guess the question is what they should doā€¦ fighter says stop, you say ok and wave it off? or wait to the very end? or?

Wave it off.

Exactly right. Itā€™s amazing how many ā€œfansā€ on here donā€™t know anything about combat sports in general. No big trainer in boxing would keep working with a prospect that quit like that, period. Maybe thatā€™s mean lol, but itā€™s the truth.
