In 2001, I was 28 years old. I was young, I was lithe, and I was smaller than most of the men on the bucket brigade. I wasn't as strong, or as knowledgeable, or as experienced as them. But I did what I could, because I could. I carried buckets, I dug holes, and when the cadaver dogs took a break, I crawled into the smaller spaces, my nose touching the ground, checking for life, checking for the remains of life.
All of the rest of us are scared, not just of nightmares from the past, but from the possibilities of the future. Every cough, every lump, every odd heartbeat is cause for concern, cause to either run to the doctor or willfully ignore in an attempt to deny reality. This was the cost of our actions, the cost of doing what was right.
We didn't ask cost then. You don't get to ask it now.
Honest question, shouldn't the costs fall on NYC and NYS? I get the Fed gov't wanting to help out, more money/bigger tax base and all. NYC isnt a poor place, maybe they should ask the city they worked in and protected to take care of them (instead of paying for healthcare for illegals).

If it was as easy as giving money to things that need it that would be easy. The problem is that politicians will add bribe money to noble bills. I think it was a bill to benefit veterans of Desert Storm that that Ted guy from Alaska had a screaming match about. He was a little guy a senator who screamed and turn red about support for this bill but then it came out that it was about he had snuck some money for a bridge to nowhere on some remote island that was basically a bribe to a construction company that had given him money. You can bribe a congressman or senator with 50 to a $100,000 and get them to support a bill that will give you a million. It happens all the time. I absolutely would support twice as much money for First Responders if you could put checks on it to make sure did it did not turn into a fund that you could use later to study some stupid things that people just get bribed with. It is way worse than you think we are seeing a lot of it in Michigan with all of the Aerospace money that is getting thrown around now. New York is the king of corruption. The people who are the real piece of s*** are the ones who fake cry stare into a camera and question your patriotism when deep down they are only acting because they promised money to a large donor. It's like the people with charities who keep 97% of the money they are kind of dicks but you cannot put it past anyone. They will genuinely hold up bills and money for good causes because they want to put some of their own pork in it. That's the stuff that definitely needs to get cleaned up.
