Oklahoma State wrestling producing MMA stars

Magnum TA -
Purgey - Cormier was from OSU?

OKTT time?

That's a 184 lb. Cormier.

SinCityHustler -
Sephiroth -  not surprising, all these top wrestling schools will be doing the same. Iowa, Arizona St., Penn St, Minnesota, and on will be producing great fighters forever.

Arizona State is no where near being a top wrestling school.  They're not even on the second teir.

With that saaid, the NCAA will continue to produce top level MMA'ists.

Arizona state was a top tier wrestling school.  They are also the only team west of the Rocky Mountains to win an NCAA team title.

Don Frye

Ill be going to OSU next semester, too bad I cant wrestle lol. Phone Post

That pic of Cormier in what looks to be an escape was vs the man who defeatd him in the NCAA finals that year...Cael Sanderson.Sadly for Daniel he had to wrestle the best ever for a chance to be NCAA champion.

The college wrestling season is brutal.Filled with overtraining, and excessive/ frequent weight cutting.Truly survival of the fittest. The average athlete would have great difficulty making it through a season without breaking down mentally or physically or both. MMA offers the competitor a bit more freedom while wrestling is more team structured with coaches pushing relentlesly.

Even Chuck Lidell ,who sorta downplayed his college wrestling backround, spoke about being injured more while wrestling than while fighting. Fighting for all those takedowns and working to aoid being turned is just really hard on you.

The guys who succeed at that level are cut from a different mold, they just need to develop the other skills needed for MMA but their will is certainly developed.

MMA Messiah - Amazing how Randy's face has looked exactly the same for his entire life.

Pretty sure he was born looking like that.

That may be the case but it wasn't in this century.  In fact they haven't been at the very top tier in over 20 years.    Iowa State was once a top tier school too, even knocked off Iowa for the NCAA championship, this year they may not win a single dual meet.  Big difference between was and is.

With that said, ASU has produced some excellent fighters.

That pic of Daniel Cormier reminds me of Tyrone Woodley..just bigger

Thank you for learning me on it OP sadly I don't follow wrestling much or I'd be pretty damn impressed by OSU I always heard OK had great wrestlers just never thought to look them up

I'm pretty sure Frank Trigg didn't wrestle for OU or OSU, but a smaller college in Edmond, OK called UCO (Same school as Jared Hess). I worked with his mother in law when I was in HS (back in '00) and she introduced me to twinkle toes. This was back in his Japan days though. Daniel Roberts is also an Okie wrestler.

Either way, Oklahoma is one of the best if not the best wresting state in the country. I know a couple of OU guys that are amateurs now and look to be doing well so far. Phone Post

Why so much misinformation on these boards?  Pennsylvania is by far the best HS wrestling state and current NCAA division 1 wrestling champions.  I mention high schools becasue high schools are the ones who feed the colleges with wrestlers and go on to become All Americans and National Champions.  NJ and Ohio are considered 2nd and 3rd and Cali is widely accepted as the #4 best High school wrestling state.  Those 4 states consistently produce the most All Americans once their wrestlers graduate and go to college.  The best wrestling colleges in recent years, (this century) have been Oklahoma State, Iowa, Minnesota, Penn State, and Cornel and Iowa State.

2 off the top of my head, maybe some more not mentioned in this thread.

I dont really follow wrestling all that much but are your rankings recent or historical? I know wrestling is a big deal here at the HS level in OK altho I think kids are getting lazier and dont want to put in the work wrestling requires. I cant disagree with your last sentence those colleges have been the wrestling powerhouses for years.

Great thread! I'm gonna watch the Iowa wrestling practice and get motivated!

This is correct.

Oklahoma has two very good college wrestling teams - Oklahoma State, led by John Smith, and Oklahoma, which is sure to be on the rise now that NCAA Coach of the Year Mark Cody is in charge.

But Oklahoma high school wrestling, the measure of state quality, is no where near elite. As SCH said, PA is consistently the best, followed by NJ and Ohio, followed by California, followed by New York.

This is correct about the High Schools and their ranking. Not really debateable either.

Little bit of both.  Those 4 top wrestling states have been those same top 4 for years.  Oklahoma gets big recognition per capita but overall straight up, they've fallen off quite a bit.  They still produce their world beaters every now and then but no longer at the rate that they used to 20 years ago for example.  Over the last 15 years or so the huge national Super tournaemnts surfaced and states began facing each other that used ot never compete against one and other.  Just this past week end the Clash, National dual meet championship was held in Minnesota.  PA and NJ did not attend.  Ohio won it, Minnesota was 2nd, California 3rd and Florida 4th.  Oklahoma did not compete either.  There's the Ironman, the Beast of the East, the Reno tournament of Champions, etc., that bring in numerous states teams to compete and find out who really is the top dog.  Consistently it's those 4 teams that I listed.

I follow HS wrestling very closely.  I'm on the national message boards every day of the year, even the off season.  I do the same for college and international with the US perspective.  I attend NCAAs every year and living in Las Vegas, I've been able to attend the Olympic trials and world team trials.  If I had to make a guess, I'd put Oklahome around #15 - #20 or so.  Lots of States have really brought their level up.

double

When it comes to college wrestling it seems that OSU and Missouri (Askren, Chandler, Woodley) are producing the best MMA talent. Phone Post
