This is probably true. A big chunk of the French male population was either killed or wounded in WWI. So much so that the French population did not grow at all during most of the years between WWI and WWII while the German population skyrocketed (in comparison).

Oh my Lord - that one guy in the light colored tights practically PRANCED away from his opponent in one part of the fight. The handwork reminded me of John Sullivan doing his thing.
