Prime Cowboy had a good striking and sub game

Yes he did. Just not on Charles level tho. Charles is better in both now.

BJ is def one is the early ones. Same with Mach Sakurai.

1000%

Charles has to be the most complete and without question the best finisher the UFC has ever had on the roster.

16 subs in mind bottling and 19 finishes. Mike Tyson, Michael Jordan, Tom Brady level greatness.

On top of winning and defending the title with all finishes, while laying waste to Khabib’s legacy

They both went in diff directions: Charles was the bjj guy who developed striking and vice versa for Cowboy.

Pettis also had some good subs at the highest level - hurt Melendez and Bendo both and then tapped them both.

Anderson Silva. Except reverse what they’re best at.

Silva’s striking = Oliveira’s BJJ
Silva’s BJJ = Oliveira’s striking

Oliveria’s striking is better than Andy’s bjj.

Did u see how he handled Gaethje Porier and Chandler?

Yeah, back and forth. Getting the worst of it in most exchanges. That’s about the equivalent of what Silva did on the ground before he pulled off subs.

Silva is not the sub threat that Oliveira is on his feet. To be fair, he didnt need to be, he was good enough to finish most guys with his striking. But Oliveira has outstruck or gone toe to toe with the best strikers in the div. Andy wasn’t doing that vs Maia…tho he did sub Lutter. I’m an Andy fan, make no mistake but still think Charles striking is better than Andy’s bjj.

The fact that Oliveira gets rocked in all his fights gives other fighters the impression that he can be taken out on the feet, so they are confident there. Only to realize that’s where they’re losing and it’s setting up the inevitable, the submission.

He also submitted Dan Henderson, who had fought a lot of great BJJ guys and only tapped to HW Nogueira to that point. Plus had great reversals on Okami and a couple other good grapplers. Always defended himself very well. Yeah I think I just rate his BJJ higher than you do.

Anyway I think Oliveira is a great all around fighter and wasn’t dogging his striking with that comparison.

Wouldn’t consider those three the best strikers in the div though. They can all be very wild.

Finally watched the fight. From this thread I had assumed he put on a striking clinic. But just like last fight he was tagged & dropped a couple times. His defense definitely needs some work.

Andy def had high level BJJ and I was one of his biggest fans thru his reign so I remember it quite closely. He had Dan rocked first though. Not saying he didn’t destroy Dan but it wasn’t like a pure sub sequence. I think the reversal u are referring to was against Marquart and not Okami (a switch).

We can agree to disagree on this but no debate on who the best strikers are in the division. Who else would it be? Excluding Charles himself….Hooker? Islam? Dariush?

Yes it was almost exactly like the Chandler and Dustin fights. Yes his defense most certainly could improve (maybe just wear contacts?) but he out battled all 3 of the most dangerous strikers in the sport on his feet and tapped 2 of them and TKOd one. This version of Gaethje is better than the one that lost to Eddie and Dustin and got dropped worse off one punch.

My point is not that his defense doesn’t need work, it’s that he is the most dangerous double threat of striking and subs we shave seen so far imo.
