Olympic Boxing Contraversy

http://olympics.cbc.ca/news/article/olympic-boxing-marred-judging-controversy-again.html

The controversy in Olympic boxing continues. The AIBA cant seem to avoid claims of fixed fights.

Do you think the scoring system used by the AIBA is the real problem or is it corruption as some claim?

Do you see any similarities to MMA judging?

It's spelled controversy Phone Post 3.0

He gets a pass for having just 18 more post than you and being around for over 13 years longer

I often do a test where I will vote someone up if they have no greens arrows, then refresh the page just to see if I can give them their first. I took a shot in the dark with OP and voila, he has his first 3 greens. I urge everyone to help this long time member with minimal posts to rack up a few just for the fuck of it. Also, his thread is a legit topic.

I think it's a combination of a shit scoring system with a heavy duty dose of international corruption on the amature level. Fuck ammy boxing and fuck the Olympics in many ways.

Votes are stupid. It's taken me forever to get rid of my 300 or whatever.

I've really had to try insanely hard over a span of 3-4 months to get rid of them.

Almost there. Phone Post 3.0

I forget the names but the black kid for the United States fought some dude from Uzbekistan I believe. Totally controlled the fight and clearly won only to lose the decision Phone Post 3.0

That was Gary Russell vs Fazliddin Gaibnazarov(Uzbekistan) in the light welterweight quarterfinals. Russell lost by a BS split decision.

As a result of the bad decisions, several judges were suspended.

"After Russian fighters were awarded victories in a pair of controversial decisions at the Rio Olympics, boxing's ruling federation has expelled a number of judges and referees it determined were not performing "at the level expected."

The International Boxing Assn., known as AIBA, did not disclose the number of officials suspended, but the BBC reported six of the 60 judges in Rio will no longer work at the Games.

AIBA spokesman Nicolas Jomard would neither confirm nor deny that number.

Boxers and national team coaches have complained about a number of decisions, prominent among them Russian Vladimir Nikitin's unanimous decision over Michael John Conlan of Ireland in a bantamweight quarterfinal Tuesday and Monday's heavyweight final, in which Russian Evgeny Tischenko won a unanimous decision over Kazakhstan's Vasiliy Levit.

Conlan lost a medal even though he appeared to win all three rounds of his fight. After the decision was announced Nikitin dropped to his knees and covered his face with his hands in obvious relief while Conlan refused to leave the ring, tearing off his top, flipping off the judges and flexing his muscles to the crowd, which cheered him."

This video starts with an interview after the bout with Conlan, and at 11:46 they show the decision. At 13:13 is when he has his jersey off and is flipping off the judges. And at 13:33 they show highlights of the bout.

Omit frivilous frat!

The first two Olympic boxing matches I watched were the Levit and Russell robberies. At that point I lost all interest in Olympic boxing, as it's clearly pointless. Let's save the fighters some time and energy and not have them fight at all. Just get the judges together and have them vote for their favorite between the two.

They should abolish amateur boxing in the Olympics like they've done with many other sports and let pros in anyway.

Yea, I saw that but decided to go to the bathroom before I fixed it but didn't know that you only have 5 minutes to change it so.... there it is.

I am starting to think the same thing. As much as I would hate to see it go I don't think it can stay until they clean it up but it's been this way for a very long time with no real effort to change. Sad

ya, because all the pros are just chomping at the bit to go to the olympics and fight for free...

Thanks but I really don't care about votes, don't even know how they work.

wheeels - ya, because all the pros are just chomping at the bit to go to the olympics and fight for free...

I think you'd be surprised.

-There's plenty of pros from countries with no Olympic Boxing support structure to speak off that would still love to represent their country at least once in their lifetimes.

And even in countries that do have them like the US, theres still plenty of boxers who went pro right  away because they had mouths to feed.

-Who said anything about free? You think Usain Bolt runs for free? Athletism has gone pro a while ago. Even now the gold medal amateur winner gets $100k. Add in a pro-boxing support structure where some measure of sponsorship is allowed and you are looking at even bigger paychecks.

Enough to bring in Floyd Mayweather? No. But enough to bring in pro national champs and maybe even some international champs, increasing the allure and competition level of the tourney tremendously? Heck to the yeah.

-For wBoxing the 100k gold remains one of the bigger paychecks available on their side of the equation. Why not give pro-women the chance to grab what would probably be an even bigger payout if they were involved.

-Of course some rule changes would have to be made, like taking a point by default when a knockdown is achieved etc. Basically make it a 3 round pro fight with bigger gloves because you will be fighting multiple fights and they dont want you all concussed for medal match.

-And there could still be an Amateur World Championships to send the green grasshopers to. But Olympics should be the best level possible. Heck they could even give every amateur world champ a straight pass to the Olympics to fight with the pros, Im sure they'll beat some of them.
