Olympics--Let's Do PbP's and Recaps Threads daily

Due to the time differential, many of us won't be able to watch all of the matches and divisions.  Ippon.org will give us the results, but not the color.  To me, the color is what makes the story.   A couple years ago,  this forum did some threads on World Cup events like this one for Tunis.

www.mixedmartialarts.com/mma.cfm

For the USA, the daily action will be available on www.nbcolympics.com

I can help with the semi-finals and finals most days, but I go to sleep way too early to catch the prelims and quarterfinals.

Anyone else think this is a good idea, and willing to help?  If forum members have specific competitors they really care about they should mention them on this thread or a daily thread so that we can make sure to try and give good color on those competitors.

Here are the times for the competition (London time zone)

Eliminations and quarterfinals                                  9:30

Semi Finals, Repechage & Bronze                         14:00

Finals                                                                     16:10

Here's a story about US Judo Olympian Kayla Harrison. She overcame abuse by her former coach to make the Olympics. And God Bless Jimmy Pedro, sounds like an awesome person. I'd make a thread about it but I can't make threads for some reason.

US judo star looks to make Olympic history after abuse by childhood coach

Published July 18, 2012

In London, thousands of athletes from around the world will hope to turn a lifetime of rigorous training and sacrifice into the ultimate triumph.

But perhaps no athlete has endured a more tumultuous journey than U.S. judo star Kayla Harrison.

The 22-year-old Ohio native was sexually abused for years by her childhood coach, Daniel Doyle, who is now serving a 10-year prison sentence after Harrison testified against him in 2007.

SUMMARY

Name: Kayla Harrison

Sport: Judo

Event: 78kg (172 lb)

Age: 22

Hometown: Middletown, Ohio

Career highlights:

2010 World Judo Champion

Top-ranked American woman at 78kg

Two-time national junior champion

Gold medal at 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials (78kg)

In the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal at Penn State last year, Harrison decided she needed to go public with her story.

"I was almost disheartened by my country, to hear that kids at Penn State were protesting for (Joe Paterno) but not for the victims," she told Fox Sports.

"What kind of world do I live in? Are students really doing that? When that happened, when the victim was that far away (from people's minds), I was in shock."

Harrison grew up in Middletown, Ohio, and was mentored in judo by Doyle, who formed a close bond with the family, going on vacations and accompanying Harrison to international tournaments.

Harrison recalled that the abuse started at around age 11.

After Doyle pleaded guilty at trial, Harrison left Ohio, journeying to Wakefield, Massachusetts, to train with Jimmy Pedro Jr., an Olympic bronze medalist in 1996 and 2004.

"The Pedros saved my life and they changed my life. I don't even want to think about what would have happened to me if I had stayed (in Ohio)."

Though she nearly quit the sport entirely and admits to having suicidal thoughts at times, Harrison credits Pedro for keeping her on the path to Olympic glory. He insisted she gain more than 30 pounds to compete in the 78kg (172 lb) weight class.

"There were times where I hated judo. I hated my mom. I hated everyone. I wanted to run away to New York and just start over," Harrison told the Los Angeles Times.

"The Pedros saved my life and they changed my life. I don't even want to think about what would have happened to me if I had stayed (in Ohio)."

Harrison is now on the cusp of making history. No American has ever won a gold medal in judo, but she is hoping to do just that in London after becoming the first American woman in 26 years to win a world judo title two years ago.

In 2008, Harrison won her division at the Olympic Trials, but did not compete in Beijing because the U.S. had not qualified at 78kg.

"(Winning gold in London) would be an achievement of a lifetime," said Pedro, who along with his father has worked for years in hopes of bringing the U.S. its first Olympic judo title.

An illustration of how deep the talent pool is in the U.S. swim team:

Anyone remember U.S. swimmer Katie Hoff ?

She qualified for the 2004 Olympic at the age of 15 and was being touted as the "Female Michael Phelps" in the lead up to the Beijing Olympics. Even though she fell short of expectation by not winning gold, she still managed to medal in 3 events (a silver and two bronzes).

Yet her performances seemed to flounder after Beijing and she didn't even quality for the 2012 team, despite being only 24.

Using the London times you provided: The US comparable start times for U.S.Eastern time with daylight savings time are:

Eliminations - 4:30AM
Semi Finals, repecharge and Bronze - 9AM
Finals - 11:10 Am.

London is usually 6 hrs ahead of the US Eastern time Zone but at this time of the year we in Michigan are on daylight savings time (1 hr ahead). So the time diff. is 5 hrs.

I will do my best to watch and report. Judo begins July 28 and ends Aug 3.

I have tickets for the afternoon sessions on Saturday and Sunday.

I'm really looking forward to it.

I am in Europe so I will watch all of it...so happy about this :)

 judom,

If possible, could you please give some details on Marti Malloy's preliminary bouts in 57kg?  Her first round is against Monteiro.   This is my first round upset special of the Olympics.

I believe that she will get past Monteiro and will have a tougher match against Boukouvala (GRE).  Hoping that Lupetey (CUB) knocks off Boukouvala making the trip to the semi finals easier for her.

The draws are up at www.ippon.org

In Phone Post

OC,

I will definitely watch it. I don't think Malloy will get past Monteiro, but you never know with Judo (Iliadis lost to the German this year...its Judo anything is possible !).

can't wait for tomorrow...

I can't believe there is sports like badminton and table tennis and equestrian (insane !) in the Olympics...

My list of who I want to win by weight class: Zantaraia, Hashbaatar, Wang, Kim, Iliadis, Hwang. 100+ kg I don't have interest in.

wtf- no judo TV from the IJF website. This sucks as I have been waiting all year for this.

there are streams JBB :)

go here:

http://www.eurovisionsports.tv/london2012/index.html

And then search Judo in the search box.

Stream starts in 5 min.

Thanks I will give it a try. Right now I am using www.nbcolympics.com. Picking my internet provider and loging in with my internet providers log-in and P/w. Scroll down to judo.

 jbb,

how did the feed work for you?  It was awful for me. Also, what browser did you use?

The Brazilian girl in -48K just won gold and destroyed the Romanian. Didn't look like she was "in the game". The Russain in mens -60K final Galstyan did a ippon counter makikomi harai like move to a pickup by Hiraoka Japan which was a counter to an uchimata by Gastalin. Never seen a sequence like this before.

The Romanian girl was injured prior to the Olympics and they are saying she got injured in the 1st round as well, so she hardly was at 100%. Still, the Brazilian girl is great.

Damn, all the videos on the Greek judo site are blocked because they contain Olympic content. I haven't seen a single match, plus I read Zantaraia went out in his first match.

 Seong gyeong,

You can see archived matches at www.nbcolympics.com  Meanwhile, judom and easyrhino gave some great color commentary in the Day 1 thread.
