I've seen a few nice sweeps lately: Rich Clementi and Alberto Crane come to mind but haven't see a finish or lately. There've been more gogoplata finishes.
Too easy to counter?
Forrest hit a nice one on Rua to take his back.
Rani Yahya hit one on Chase Beebe as did Delson Heleno when he fought Jake Ellenberger.
has anyone ever really finished one in MMA?
"Forrest hit a nice one on Rua to take his back."
That was the first one that came to mind, definitely impressive.
Lil nog hit a mean one on hendo, and how it didn't finish him, no one
knows.
Gil Castillo submitted a guy with one like 5-7 years ago. I think the problem is that it's not really that painful or "locked down" so pretty much everyone just moves until they can either roll or pull of of the hold.
It's pretty much a sweep with some extra torque for good measure.
"I think the problem is that it's not really that painful or "locked down" so pretty much everyone just moves until they can either roll or pull of of the hold."
It's pretty painful if the guy sits up, grabs your waist, and starts to push his hips forward. It feels just like a Kimura.
Obviously most people will counter it before it gets to that point though. Still great for sweeps, taking the back, and even the Toe Hold.
Would love to see the omoplata to triangle finish.
iirc, some older ones (attempts) were serra vs shonie and bj vs din
Card, thanks for the vid! Looked like that dude tried to muscle/resist instead of rolling to escape.
That ring/cage looked like the raptor enclosure in Jurassic Park
Seems like it's more of a transitional Move that you on Occasion finish with. Watching Hours of Marcelo leads me to believe it's a great Way to get to LOT of other Things.
That was one huge cage.
It's a beautiful sweep/transition move....P.S. if you get caught in a good omoplata...it hurts like a mother. Using the legs and hips to crank someones arm is a lot more powerful than using your arms.
One of my guys finished one about three months ago in the Gladiator Challenge in Lake Port Cal. He pulled off a textbook omoplata from rubber guard and seatbelted the guy down and ripped his shoulder out. The guy seemed to think that omoplata's were just something that hurt a little but wouldnt actually tear anything...
Gerald, any pointers on finishing it?
"Using the legs and hips to crank someones arm is a lot more powerful than using your arms. "
Yeah but I think the entry and position itself leave lots of space to escape without the gi.
^^^True, but IMO, the way Eddie Bravo does it makes it tighter than the traditional way.
^ yeah, haven't seen people icepick too much in mma though.
it's a great move
