ONE FC Heading to 16,500 Capacity Stadium in Manila on August 31st, 18 Shows Planned for 2013

After selling out the Stadium Negara in Malaysia, ONE Fighting Championship is headed to the Philippines for what promises to be the most ambitious show the promotion has put on yet. The 16,500 capacity Arenata Coliseum is best known for playing host to the boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier in 1975 and on August 31st, mixed martial arts (MMA) is set for its own 'Thriller in Manila'.

MMA is very popular in the Philippines with ONE FC regularly screened on ESPN and Star Sports, the UFC on the Balls Channel and URCC on Solar Sports. It is possible to watch the sport practically every night and the country is also a proven breeding ground for some of the region's most exciting fighters.

URCC champions Eduard Folayang (11-2), Roy Docyogen (10-0), Kevin Belingon (9-1). Eric Kelly (7-0) and Honorio Banario (6-1) are all likely to be in action which should give the fans plenty to cheer about while the card is also expected to see the ONE FC debut of legendary lightweight Shinya Aoki.

ONE FC has made phenomenal progress since being formed just 12 months ago and has already put on events in Singapore, Jakarta and, most recently, Kuala Lumpur. A major MMA show had never been attempted in Malaysia before but ONE FC was able to sell out the biggest indoor arena in the country at the first attempt.

I hope this doesn't backfire. We've seen it many times that a promising MMA promotion has ruined itself by trying to grow too fast.

 they are attacking...

they are making the footprints but the UFC has the better tv deal in the philippines.  One FC has a great pan regional tv deal with espn asia but the UFC has a deal with a good filipino network that caters only to filippinos unlike espn asia that focuses on regional asian programming.

Zuffa nneds to continue siging these type of deals in malaysia, indonesia, singapore, hong kong, etc... to cut one fc off at the knees.

Zuffa also needs to start staging events there and plant it's flag.

they have to move fast and grab as much market share as possible before the UFC comes into town.

The thing is the UFC is focusing more on the biggest economies in asia  (india, china, japan, korea, etc..) while one fc is trying to plant it's flag on the outskirts.

It looks like they will be the "Strikeforce" of asia... develop a solid grass roots base in "san jose" but will be relegated there.

ESPN asia is a great tv deal but it's also limitting.  If the UFC signed with them they wouldnt be able to sign with sony and develop tuf india and programming just for india and air tuf right after cricket which is the most popular sport in india..

They have the same relationship in the Philippines.  They can focus on each market seperately and pggy back on the major national networks and their most populat national shows and sports whereas one fc cant do that.

Zuffa will continue to marginalize one fc as they cut more and more national tv deals in each country within that region.
