mats at least 2500 insurance maybe 1000 a year electric 50-150 depends water rent window stickers 300. some sort of advertising 500-1500. radio chairs
promoting your first 5 year old black belt: priceless.
You could look into holding classes at another school which may already have mats. That way you save money there and can pay for a share of the other expenses.
to save/make money, go to a ballet school and ask to rent space.another MA school might secretly take your leads and talk shit about you. it happens a lot. sure you can beat the shit out of the guy,but youd be without a place. also, dance schools usually have a large client base to start from. cut a deal with there instructor for there students. it will help you till you can est. your own place.
I actually worked out in school
in florida like that , shared space with a
dance /ballet school. Good Idea.
keep this website in your favorites - there isnt much info on there right
now but in the next 2 weeks it will be jam packed with info on opening
and running a successful school.

sorry for the current construction!

Maybe an idea...
Check out a local YMCA and offer to teach jiu-jitsu. Tell them
you'll volunteer, or work for a low hourly rate. Let them promote
and advertise for you. Stay there for about 6 months or a year to
build your student base. Once you have enough guys, find a
place of your own.
Joe Lauzon,
actually, that's along the lines of what i'm thinking...there's definitely more money in training kids, and there are other established pro mma gyms not that far away
wisconsinjiujitsu is on the right track with that idea...
... and remember, when you do finally open for your self.... you want to have enough money set aside so you can pay bills for TWO YEARS without profit!!!!
This is the standard business rule and you will most likely fail if you dont
keep that in mind
insurance can be obtained for 550 dollars a year thru esportsinsurance.com in quebec. they were real reasonable and dont put many restrictions on what you teach. just that you wear protective gear when sparring. I think GH Feldman now offers insurance for mma schools again. they insure fights like the ufc, k-1 etc. the real problem is rent, and advertising. you better have enough to support the school for a full year. and I learned the hard way that you need contracts even if they are monthly. Dont go thru trying to collect from your students. it puts a strain on the relationship. If a person wont commit to at least 6 months tuition they arent going to stay anyway.
also, if you are in an area unfamiliar with mma, dont hype up the mma. just say modern martial arts /self defense. people freak at the thought of Cage fighting.

I just wantred to come back on and say if you only listen to one thing on this thread... it should be this!

Good stuff; any more words of wisdom?
