Overeem after the first round...

Is virtually useless at UFC level

Its been the same story since he was a LHW in pride.

His biggest wins have always come early... in the first few minutes he is seriously dangerous for anybody he fights... as soon as he gasses, thats it!

Its a mental thing, not a physical one. A hurdle he badly needs to get over. At the moment it seems like an issue he refuses to address.

A fight between him and Mir would be fun though, first round would be amazing... if it goes any longer it will probably look like Gonzaga vs Jordan Phone Post

That and his chin is suspect. Also, his defense seems a bit lazy considering he is in the heavyweight division and those guys hit like a truck. Phone Post

His defense gets lazy because he's too tired to hold his hands up or move his head. Yes it's 100% mental. The guy just doesn't think when he's fighting. Phone Post

Agreed. Mir vs. Overeem would be a good competitive matchup.

Overeem has a career MMA record of 5-6 when his fights go past the 1st round

Wow that's not good

To be fair the guy threw like 50 billion punches in half a minute. He came within a hair of winning this fight.

Chin is glass , not suspect , been that way since pride days Phone Post

IvanNilinNavi - Mental? It's probably physical. Not everyone has the capacity to develop great cardio, especially those gifted with great strength or explosiveness.

This is not a comic book. There are no peak humans. There are simply different people with different abilities, and no one who wins a high level marathon will also win a sprint.

the other thing is, he has a really weird frame...

for a guy with long arms, they are really muscular... i can't really think of many athletes with a wingspan like him with arms that thick.

i imagine he burns a ton of O2 swinging those around....

Tell that to Mo Farah, Olympic 5000m and 10,000m Gold medals, and just done the same at the World Championships - the second man EVER to do the double double.

He is gonna race Usain Bolt over 600m and he has a good chance at winning. Phone Post 3.0

Impressive - maybe there are peak humans. But the fact remains that cardio has a large genetic component that mma fans generally ignore, despite their recognition that strength and speed are hugely influenced by genes. When certain fighters have poor cardio throughout their careers, it is generally attributed to mental issues, lack of heart, weight cutting, or sheer laziness. These fighters are usually the explosive, first round terror type, like Vitor and Overeem. I would wager that their poor cardio is simply because they are natural sprinters. We can't all be Mo Farah.
Diego Brandau comes to mind. Phone Post 3.0

His defense has always been lazy. His chin hasn't ever been great. His gas tank has always been less than impressive. It didn't help that he expending most of his energy trying to finish Browne, those shots would have finished almost anyone else.

Not only that, Browne kept landing that front kick and I knew it was only a matter of time before he got him flush.

Overeem was plodding forward, with no respect, and struggling to keep his hands up. Browne landed that kick several times and he did nothing to adjust. No head movement, no lateral movement, nothing.

His defense is the worst. Phone Post 3.0
