Strikeforce: "Overeem vs. Werdum" live on Showtime this Saturday nighjt represents the second leg of the promotion's heavyweight grand prix tournament. Leading the charge is current Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem as he tries to avenge a 2006 loss to Fabricio Werdum in the main event.

"The Reem" is a whopping -500 favorite.

Of course anything can happen in the sport of mixed martial arts, especially when you have the grappling credentials that "Vai Cavalo" does (see Emelianenko, Fedor). Nevertheless, the two-time ADCC champion is a +300 underdog.

I think Overeem will win but -500 is madness.

I think Fedor was -600 against Werdum.

It's hard to imagine Werdum winning. He didn't exactly have an easy time with the 225lb Overeem that lost all the time.

Overeem, Barnett, Noons, don't care about the rest. Oh yeah, I guess JZ because I don't know the other guy.

Lol that's because Couture picked Werdum to win it. Still, that is steep considering Werdum has beaten Overeem before and is coming off a victory over Fedor. Phone Post

Holy Shit - I think Overeem is going to win too, but may have to drop a little on Wedrum at those odds. Now way should Oereem be THAT much of a favorite.

The 225 pound Overeem lost all the time because he was facing elite competition all the time. We have no idea what the 250+ pound Overeem will do against elite MMA competition. He may continue to steamroll his opponents, or he might fold up like the 225 Overeem used to do when faced with a guy who he didn't overwhelm.

Is there any reason to think he won't overwhelm Werdum?

he is the favorite but Werdum is a very good fighter. We will see....

Well, his last legit mma fight was against a hyped up newby (Brett Rogers). In that fight he threw Rogers around like a ragdoll, but essentially, thats because Reem's the worst possible matchup for Rogers. Rogers' strength is literally his strength (and size). Reem was stronger, and has a lot more skill in every area of the game.

Reem'll outweigh Werdum, and be stronger, but it Werdum can get the fight down to the ground, it becomes very interesting. Also interesting is if it makes it into the later rounds where Werdum should have more of an edge based on the eventual tiring of the horsemeat.

All that said, its an MMA fight, and anything can happen.
I think Werdum is a very live underdog and placed a healthy chunk (by my standards) on him to win.

I'd say the fact that Werdum has already beaten him once is a pretty good reason.

You don't know Wilcox?

I got The Reem, Barnett, Noons, Cormier, Oldereem and Wilcox

Hahaha That Oldereem name for Valentijn keeps cracking us Dutch fans up, brilliant! After his last win over Sefo everybody in the mma sscene in Holland called him Oldereem, i thought he did not like cause he is "python" but now can laugh at it. Phone Post

Sure, I just don't think he can do that. Overeem is just too powerful and will be too dangerous on the feet. I will not be at all surprised if this looks like a carbon copy of the Rogers fight.

I would love for Overeem to get exposed. Amazing what muscles and success in a completely different sport can do for one's stock in MMA.

I would bet if Overeem was -300 or less, but the current odds are too great. A parlay with Overeem, Barnett, GSP, and Bader has a decent return.

you can still find the reem at -320 at boomaker and -330 at the greek.Should be a pretty easy fight for him

The "odds" is a pure mathematic exercise and has nothing to do with what any "experts" think about the fight. The book in this case is incenting people to bet on Werdum in order to get a certain volume of bets, and an ultimate target return. On the street, which is a better way to bet in my view, the book is going to have different odds because there is less chance of getting burned, because of them laying off.

Rogers wasn't Reems last legit mma fight. He ko'ed Duffey very easily, how is that not legit? Phone Post
